About the Lab
Professor Dong-Sung Cho's research lab specializes in strategic management, national competitiveness, and corporate governance, with a strong focus on emerging market dynamics, particularly in East Asia. The lab explores how latecomer firms achieve competitive advantage through strategic timing, innovation, and institutional reforms, while also examining the role of design and governance structures in economic development. Key research directions include the impact of outside directors on firm performance, the evolution of national competitiveness frameworks, and the strategic use of design as a driver of economic and social progress.

15The effects of strategic order of entry on firms' performance have long been an issue in many areas of study. Past research efforts, however, have been concentrated mostly on first mover or early entrant advantages. To contribute to developing a theory of latecomer strategies, the authors investigate how latecomers compete successfully or even leapfrog early movers. They review previous studies on early mover advantages and disadvantages, and group the sources of such advantages or disadvantages
The contribution of outside directors to firm performance has been shown to be inconsistent. Korean companies first began in 1998 to introduce outside directors to carry out governance reform. This paper analyses the impact of outside directors on corporate performance during the governance reform movement undertaken in Korea in 1999 as well as the moderating effect of the large shareholder and managerial ownership rate. Michael Porter’s work helps explain the sources of international competitiveness possessed by the economies of advanced nations, but has a limited application when it comes to explaining the levels and dynamic changes of economies in less developed or developing countries. The experience of Korea’s economic development in the past three decades reveals how groups of well-educated, motivated, and dedicated people have played a central role in not only shaping the nation’s competitiveness but also
In recent years, design has been a conscious and important element in Korea's growth strategy. Dong‐Sung Cho reviews the impressive outcomes linked to this decision and confirms that the “design revolution” continues. Indeed, it is evolving to provide significant future opportunities not only for global competition, but also as a force for improving the quality of life within Korea itself .

This inductive study of 26 Korean long-lived companies led to propositions exploring these questions. Long-lived companies had long-tenured founders, less frequent successions, high ratio of insider succession and a formal succession process to secure management stability and competitiveness. It was also observed that
Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) is a rising business trend reflected by the recent imposition of stronger regulations and initiatives by more firms. This chapter unravels the concept of ESG by analyzing how it has developed and how it will be developed further in the future. In doing so, this chapter provides a theoretical and philosophical explanation of why firms are engaging in such efforts. Moreover, the chapter comprehensively integrates concepts related to ESG such as CSR, Crea
This paper analyzes the Korean biotechnology sector with an analytical framework of National Innovation System (NIS).
