About the Lab

Professor Dong-Sung Kim's research lab specializes in intelligent systems and ubiquitous computing, with a focus on robot navigation, ambient intelligence, and social media analytics. The lab develops advanced spatial representation techniques—such as the s-map—for indoor robotics, enabling efficient obstacle detection and navigation using 3D sensor data. It also explores public opinion mining from social media, particularly on high-impact societal issues like nuclear energy, using natural language processing and sentiment analysis. Additionally, the lab investigates cloud computing research trends and the integration of embedded systems in smart home environments.

Dong-Sung Kim, Jae‐Min Lee, Wook Hyun Кwon, In Kwan Yuh
SJR Q1IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics

This paper describes the design and implementation of a home network system using UPnP middleware and an embedded interface device. The developed home network system comprises a home server program, appliance emulators (e.g., for TV, refrigerator, and air-conditioner), and an embedded interface device for networked home appliances.

A method for recognition and localization of generic objects for indoor navigation
Dong-Sung Kim, R. Nevatia

We introduce an efficient method for recognition and localization of generic objects for robot navigation, which works on real scenes. The generic objects used in our experiments are desks and doors as they are suitable landmarks for navigation. The recognition method uses significant surfaces and accompanying functional evidence for recognition of such objects. Currently, our system works with planar surfaces only and assumes that the objects are in a "standard" pose. The localization and orien

Public Opinion Sensing and Trend Analysis on Social Media: A Study on Nuclear Power on Twitter
Dong-Sung Kim, Jong Woo Kim
International Journal of Multimedia and Ubiquitous Engineering

Due to their popularity and rapid propagation capability, social media have become important communication channel on public opinions because they work as a main virtual space to raise new public issues, discussion on these issues, and make opinion directions on them. With the recognition of the importance of social media, many enterprises and governments try to use social media as marketing tools or public opinion sensing tools. Nuclear power has become one of trending public issues in Korea af

Public Opinion Mining on Social Media: A Case Study of Twitter Opinion on Nuclear Power
Dong-Sung Kim, Jong Woo Kim
Advanced science and technology letters

Social media, including micro-blogs such as Twitter, have become main channels to communicate and share public social opinion among people. The opinion on nuclear power is an important social issue because nuclear plant construction needs national consensus. This paper proposes an opinion mining approach to monitor public sentiments on nuclear related issues using tweets on Twitter. The proposed process consists on (1) crawling related tweets, (2) text preparation, (3) sentiment dictionary const

Representation and computation of the spatial environment for indoor navigation
Dong-Sung Kim, Ramakant Nevatia

We introduce a spatial representation, s-map, for an indoor navigation robot. The s-map represents the locations of obstacles in a planar domain, where obstacles are defined as any objects that can block movement of the robot. In building the s-map, the viewing triangle constraint and the stability constraint are introduced for efficient verification of vertical surfaces. These verified vertical surfaces and 3-D segments of obstacles smaller than a robot, are mapped to the s-map by simply droppi

Object-tracking segmentation method: vertebra and rib segmentation in CT images
Dong-Sung Kim, Hanyoung Kim, Heung Sik Kang
Proceedings of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering/Proceedings of SPIE

This paper proposes a method that segments an object in 3D image slices by tracking not only the target objects to segment but also adjacent non-target objects. The tracking methodology enables the proposed method to detect and prevent a leakage, which is one of the most challenging problems in medical image segmentation. The method also provides an efficient way of modification of segmentation results by informing only suspicious image slices because of a leakage. The proposed method is applied

Barrier embedded chaotic micromixer
Dong-Sung Kim, Seok Woo Lee, Tai Hun Kwon, S.S. Lee

In this paper, we present a new chaotic passive micromixer named barrier embedded micromixer (BEM), with mixing visualization experimental results. Chaotic mixing in the microchannel has been successfully achieved by introducing periodic barriers on one microchannel wall which cause periodic perturbation in the velocity field of the helical flow. The BEM was made by PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) from SU-8 masters which were fabricated by conventional photolithography. Two fluid flows containing di
