About the Lab
Professor Dong Sup Lee's research lab focuses on infectious diseases, particularly antibiotic-resistant urinary tract infections caused by *Escherichia coli*, with an emphasis on understanding resistance mechanisms, clinical management, and prevention strategies. The lab also investigates the impact of lifestyle and physiological factors—such as sleep deprivation and hormonal changes—on urological and sexual health. Additionally, the lab applies econometric methods, including hedonic pricing models, to study the economic value of urban environmental features like access to parks on housing prices. Overall, the lab bridges clinical microbiology, urology, endocrinology, and health economics to address public health challenges.

15Urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli) are the most common types of infections in women. The antibiotic resistance of E. coli is increasing rapidly, causing physicians to hesitate when selecting oral antibiotics. In this review, our objective is to ensure that clinicians understand the current seriousness of antibiotic-resistant E. coli , the mechanisms by which resistance is selected for, and methods that can be used to prevent antibiotic resistance.
Housing prices are determined by a variety of factors, including the features of the building and the neighborhood environment, and a potential buyer decides to buy a house after reviewing these factors and concluding that it is worth the price. We used Hedonic Price Methods to find the relationship between monetary value of house and access conditions to urban parks. Two meaningful results were discovered in this study: first, as the distance from the park increases, the value of the park inher
BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to identify risk factors for abscess formation in acute bacterial prostatitis, and to compare treatment outcomes between abscess group and non-abscess group. METHODS: This is a multicenter, retrospective cohort study. All patients suspected of having an acute prostatic infection underwent computed tomography or transrectal ultrasonography to discriminate acute prostatic abscesses from acute prostatitis without abscess formation. RESULTS: A total of 31 pr
The overall prevalence of ESBL-producing microorganism was 12.6% and the risk appeared to be increased in cases with a previous hospitalization, a recent history of urinary catheterization, inpatient status, cefaclor medication, cefminox administration, and female gender.
INTRODUCTION: It is unclear how sleep deprivation (SD) exerts a negative effect on men's health in terms of hypogonadism. AIM: To evaluate the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis in subjects with SD and ultimately to evaluate the erectile tissue in response to the hormonal changes. METHODS: 56 male Wistar rats were used. First, 16 rats (16 weeks old) were subjected to 72 hours of SD, and the following were compared with 16 control rats: (i) levels of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH),
Age is not a considerable factor in determining the antibiotic resistance in febrile UTIs. Ciprofloxacin should be withheld from both sexes until culture results indicate its use. Second- or third-generation cephalosporins such as cefoxitin and cefotaxime can be used empirically only in females.
This study aimed to (i) investigate the antimicrobial susceptibilities of bacteria that cause urinary tract infections (UTIs) in outpatient and inpatient settings and (ii) evaluate the risk factors for emerging antimicrobial drug resistance in UTIs in South Korea. In total, 3,023 samples without duplication were collected from females between 25 and 65 years of age who had been diagnosed with a urinary tract infection. Multicenter patient data were collected using a Web-based electronic system a
BACKGROUND: To identify the risk factors for severe bleeding requiring angioembolization among patients who received transfusions after PCNL, particularly those who underwent anatomically incorrect renal puncture. METHODS: A total of 53 patients, who received transfusions after PCNL and simultaneously had a postoperative CT scan performed between November 2009 and May 2019 at two teaching hospitals, were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were divided into two groups: those who underwent ang
BACKGROUND: Effective intervention achieved by manipulating cell-mediated xenogeneic immune responses would critically increase the clinical feasibility of xenotransplantation as immediate hyperacute rejections become controllable through genetic modulations of donor organs. Endogenous negative regulatory signals like the programmed death 1 (PD-1)-programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) system are candidate targets for the control of cell-mediated xenogeneic immune response. METHODS: A porcine PD-L1 m
Extreme landslides triggered by rainfall in hilly regions frequently lead to serious damage, including casualties and property loss. The frequency of landslide occurrences may increase under climate change, due to the increasing variability of precipitation. Developing urban areas outside landslide risk zones is the most effective method of reducing or preventing damage; however, planning in real life is a complex and nonlinear problem. For such multi-objective problems, genetic algorithms may b
Although real-time monitoring of bladder volume together with intravesical pressure can provide more information for understanding the functional changes of the urinary bladder, it still entails difficulties in the accurate prediction of real-time bladder volume in urodynamic studies with small animal models. We studied a new implantable bladder volume monitoring device with eight rats. During cystometry, microelectrodes prepared by the microelectromechanical systems process were placed symmetri
AIMS: To investigate whether deep sedation for transrectal prostate biopsy could reduce anxiety and pain and enhance rebiopsy compliance. METHODS: A two-centre prospective observation study was conducted under two different anaesthetic conditions: deep sedation with analgesia and local anaesthesia with lidocaine. A 12-core prostate biopsy was taken in all patients. Scores on a 0-10 visual analogue scale, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-X-1, the Beck Anxiety Inventory and a five-level Likert sa
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the role of antegrade irrigation via percutaneous nephrostomy on surgical outcomes in retrograde ureteroscopy in patients with upper ureter stones. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, we analyzed 134 patients who underwent retrograde semirigid ureteroscopy for upper ureter stones between August 2012 and December 2017. Patients were divided into two groups: retrograde irrigation group (conventional URS) and antegrade irrigation group (using percu
