Abstract Qian xun 謙遜 in modern Chinese is usually translated as “modesty” in English. In this paper, I examine the arguably earliest version of it in early Chinese thought, qian 謙. 『大學』에서는 儒家적 學問의 始終이 明明德, 新民, 그리고 止於至善이라는 三綱領으로 일목요연하게 제시된다. 그러나 이 세 강령을 톺아보면 지어지선의 위상이 명확하지 않음을 알 수 있다. 왜냐하면, 명명덕과 신민은 유가사상의 중핵인 修己와 治人에 각기 배속될 수 있는 반면, 지어지선은 단순히 명명덕과 신민의 지향점에 지나지 않아 보이기 때문이다. 즉 지어지선이 왜 명명덕과 신민에 병립된 제 삼의 강령인지 명확하지 않다는 것이다. 본고는 이러한 의문에서 출발하여 특히 朱子가 왜 지어지선을 하나의 독립된 강령으로 보았는지 살펴본다. 주자에게 있어 지어지선의 역할은 명명덕과 신민에 지향점을 제시하는 것뿐만 아니라, 그 둘이 종국에는 실천을 통해서만이 완성됨을 강조하는 데에 있음을 밝힌다.
