About the Lab

Professor EonSeon Jin's research lab specializes in the molecular mechanisms and biotechnological applications of carotenoid biosynthesis in microalgae, particularly focusing on astaxanthin production under environmental stress. The lab investigates gene expression profiles, regulatory pathways, and metabolic reprogramming during secondary carotenogenesis using advanced omics technologies such as cDNA microarrays and EST analysis. Additionally, the lab explores sustainable, plant-based methods for synthesizing functional nanomaterials, including gold nanoparticles using natural extracts. Their work bridges fundamental molecular biology with industrial applications in nutraceuticals, aquaculture, and nanotechnology.

In this study, a cDNA microarray was developed from over 60,000 mRNA readings to analyze the expression profiles of transcriptomes of Haematococcus lacustris under astaxanthin-inducing culture conditions,high irradiance and nitrate starvation. We investigated high light-induced alterations in antioxidant enzymes by exposing green vegetative cells of the alga Haematococcus pluvialis to excess irradiance to induce the production of astaxanthin, a carotenoid pigment.
