About the Lab
Professor Eui Kyu Chie's research lab specializes in translational oncology, focusing on optimizing radiotherapy and chemoradiotherapy strategies for gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary malignancies. The lab investigates prognostic biomarkers, treatment response, and locoregional control in locally advanced cancers, particularly rectal, esophageal, and duodenal cancers. A key research direction involves evaluating the impact of surgical margins, systemic therapy intensification, and novel radiosensitizers to improve survival outcomes.

15Adjuvant chemoradiotherapy after curative resection can achieve a long-term survival in patients with EHBD cancer. Resection margin status, number of involved lymph nodes, and histologic differentiation are associated with locoregional relapse, distant metastasis, and overall survival, respectively. Distant metastasis was the major pattern of failure, possibly due to the increased locoregional control by use of adjuvant chemoradiotherapy. Intensification of systemic treatment is warranted.
505 Background: Circumferential resection margin (CRM) and distal resection margin (DRM) have different impact on clinical outcomes after preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) followed by surgery. Effect and adequate length of resection margin as well as impact of treatment response after preoperative CRT was evaluated. Methods: Total of 403 patients with locally advanced rectal cancer underwent preoperative CRT followed by total mesorectal excision between January 2004 and December 2010. After a
Adjuvant CRT is feasible and may enhance locoregional control in advanced-staged duodenal cancer after curative resection.
BACKGROUND AND AIM: This study aimed to investigate the clinical benefits of locoregional radiation therapy (RT) before, after, and concurrent with sorafenib therapy for Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stage C hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. METHODS: Patients treated with sorafenib for BCLC stage C HCC between January 2015 and December 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. In this study, only RT to locoregional sites, including the primary HCC, tumor thrombosis, or lymph node metasta
BACKGROUND: Despite the widespread use of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy, there is no prognostic surrogate marker established in locally advanced rectal cancer. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the role of neoadjuvant rectal score as a prognostic factor to stratify individual-level risks of survival and tumor recurrence. DESIGN: This is a retrospective study. SETTINGS: This study was conducted at the Seoul National University Hospital. PATIENTS: A total of 397 patients who underwent chemoradiother
Results of this study indicate that a radiosensitizing effect for fractionated radiotherapy of valproic acid for A549 and U87MG tumors in vivo is evident and that it may be more than additive for U87MG tumors. Further exploitation of histone deacetylase inhibitors in clinical trials is warranted.
Whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) is a mainstay of the treatment for brain metastases (BM). We evaluated prognostic factors in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients undergoing WBRT for BM. The medical records of 106 CRC patients undergoing WBRT for BM between 2000 and 2014 at three institutions were reviewed. Patient and tumor factors were analyzed to identify the prognostic factors for overall survival (OS) calculated from the date of BM diagnosis to the date of death or last follow-up. Surgical resec
BACKGROUNDS: Perioperative CA19-9 value in pancreato-biliary cancers has been recognized as a prognostic factor. Herein, we investigated survival differences and recurrence patterns after adjuvant chemoradiotherapy by perioperative CA19-9 change in surgically resected extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. METHODS: Patients were divided into those with preoperative normal CA19-9 (Group 1, n = 52), those with high preoperative and normalized postoperative CA19-9 (Group 2, n = 80), and those with both h
