About the Lab
Professor Eun Hye Oh's research lab specializes in inflammatory bowel diseases, with a focus on Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The lab investigates disease prognosis, treatment response, and long-term outcomes, particularly in Asian populations, emphasizing biomarkers like CRP, anti-TNF drug levels, and endoscopic and radiologic healing as therapeutic goals. Key research directions include optimizing biologic therapy, identifying predictors of treatment response and discontinuation, and evaluating cancer risk in IBD patients with comorbid conditions such as primary sclerosing cholangitis.

15Intestinal inflammation and mucosal damage in Crohn's disease (CD) are believed to progress even during clinical remission. We investigated the long-term prognosis of CD patients in clinical remission according to serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. This study included 339 CD patients in clinical remission (Crohn's disease activity index < 150) for more than 6 months between January 2008 and December 2010. Clinical outcomes were compared between patients with normal and elevated CRP levels du
Although early treatment of Crohn's disease (CD) patients with anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) agents or immunomodulators (IMs) may improve long-term outcomes, especially those with poor prognostic factors, their effectiveness in Asians remains unclear. In this study, Korean patients with CD naïve to both intestinal surgery and intestinal complications, and with at least two risk factors for progression (diagnosis at age <40 years, systemic corticosteroid treatment <3 months after diagnosis, an
INTRODUCTION: Although endoscopic healing (EH) is recommended as the therapeutic goal in patients with Crohn's disease (CD), combined EH and radiologic healing (RH) could be a more ideal therapeutic goal considering the transmural nature of CD. We compared the prognosis of patients with CD who achieved EH, RH, both EH and RH (deep healing; DH), or no healing under treatment with anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) agents. METHODS: We analyzed 392 patients with CD who received anti-TNF treatment for
IFX-TL/ATI levels were well correlated with the clinical activity in South Korean CD patients. Our findings support the usefulness of IFX-TLs/ATI levels in treating CD patients receiving IFX in clinical practice.
Long-term outcomes of adalimumab therapy in Korean UC patients appear to be comparable to those in previously published Western studies. Furthermore, previous exposure to multiple biologic agents before adalimumab therapy and disease activity after 8 weeks of adalimumab therapy were predictors of adalimumab discontinuation.
BACKGROUND/AIMS: We conducted a nationwide population-based study to investigate incidence rates of colorectal and biliary cancers according to accompanying primary sclerosing cholangitis in Korean ulcerative colitis patients. METHODS: We used the Health Insurance Review and Assessment claim database from January 2007 to April 2020. Standardized incidence ratios of colorectal and biliary cancers in ulcerative colitis patients were calculated. RESULTS: Among 35,189 newly diagnosed ulcerative coli
BACKGROUND/AIMS: We investigated the incidences of overall and site-specific malignancies and chemopreventive effects of statin, metformin, and aspirin in patients with ulcerative colitis. METHODS: We collected data using the Health Insurance Review and Assessment claims database from January 2007 to April 2020. RESULTS: The overall malignancy risk among the 35,189 ulcerative colitis patients was similar to that of the general population (standardized incidence ratio, 0.94; 95% confidence interv
BACKGROUND/AIMS: The number of endoscopic procedures and related adverse events is increasing. We investigated South Korean endoscopists' awareness and experience of endoscopic adverse events. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used Google Forms to conduct an online questionnaire survey among South Korean endoscopists from December 11 to 29, 2020. The survey comprised 30 questions developed by members of the Quality Management Committee of the Korean Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. RESULTS: In tot
Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is characterized by dream-enacting behaviors during REM sleep. However, many sleep disorders can produce RBD mimicking symptoms, also known as 'pseudo-RBD' . We report a patient with severe obstructive sleep apnea with 'pseudo-RBD' symptoms that were eliminated by continuous positive airway pressure treatment. Polysomnography is mandatory to establish the proper diagnosis of RBD.
Studies on correlations between trough levels of infliximab (TLIs) and levels of antibody to infliximab (ATI levels) with combined mucosal and transmural healing as well as clinical remission in Crohn’s disease (CD) in non-Caucasians are still lacking. TLIs and ATI levels were measured using prospectively collected serum samples drawn from CD patients on infliximab (IFX) maintenance therapy for more than 1 year at Asan Medical Center, South Korea, from August 2017 to August 2018. We analysed cor
