About the Lab
Professor Eunah Han's research lab focuses on the intersection of public health, socioeconomic determinants, and health behaviors, with a particular emphasis on obesity, mental health disparities, and health service utilization. The lab investigates how factors such as body mass index, food environments, poverty, and lifestyle behaviors influence health outcomes across different populations, especially among older adults and racial/ethnic minorities. Using large-scale national datasets, the lab conducts rigorous epidemiological and health services research to inform health policy and reduce health inequities. Key research directions include the impact of socioeconomic status on chronic disease risk, medication adherence, and the role of environmental and behavioral factors in obesity and mental health.

15Past empirical work has shown a negative relationship between the body mass index (BMI) and wages in most cases. We improve on this work by allowing the marginal effect of non-linear BMI groups to vary by gender, age, and type of interpersonal relationships required in each occupation. We use the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 (1982-1998). We find that the often-reported negative relationship between the BMI and wages is larger in occupations requiring interpersonal skills with presu
BACKGROUND: Aspects of the food environment such as the availability of different types of food stores have recently emerged as key modifiable factors that may contribute to the increased prevalence of obesity. Given that many of these studies have derived their results based on secondary datasets and the relationship of food stores with individual weight outcomes has been reported to vary by store type, it is important to understand the extent to which often-used secondary data correctly classi
BACKGROUND: Racial minorities are a rapidly growing portion of the US population. Research suggests that racial minorities are more vulnerable to mental illness due to risk factors, such as higher rates of poverty. Given that the burden of mental illnesses is significant, equal likelihood of mental health services utilization is important to reduce such burden. Racial minorities have been known to use mental health services less than Whites. However, it is unclear whether racial disparity in pre
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify the impact of poverty on suicide risk in older adults. METHOD: The data used in this study was obtained from the National Health Insurance Service-Senior claims database from 2002 to 2013. A total of 558 147 individuals were followed for up to 12 years. Poverty was assessed from insurance premium levels, and causes of death were analysed by linking individuals' deaths to the data for causes of death from the National Statistics Office in South Korea. Cox proporti
PURPOSE: To explore the relationships of selected health behaviors to medication adherence. DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Data from Korean national health insurance claims between January 2010 and June 2011. SUBJECTS: Patients aged 65 years and older with hypertension (N = 662,170), hyperlipidemia (N = 244,702), or diabetes (N = 179,285). MEASURES: Medication adherence as a medication possession ratio from January to June 2011 as a dependent variable. The waist circumference (cm
BACKGROUND: Few previous studies investigated consumption distributions of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) over time and individual-level associations in Asia despite the recent interest in SSBs regarding obesity control. This study aimed to provide recent evidence on beverage consumption trends from 2001 to 2009 for overall and subtypes of SSBs and for milk as a comparable healthy beverage in South Korea, as well as associations with individual-level socioeconomic status (SES). METHODS: The Ko
BACKGROUND: We evaluated the effect of statin use on new-onset type 2 diabetes among individuals without atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) using nationally representative South Korean claims data (2002-2013, N = 1,016,820). METHODS: A total of 13,698 patients (statin users 5273, non-statin users 5273) aged 40-74 years, newly diagnosed with dyslipidemia but without any history of diabetes or ASCVD, were selected in 2005. We followed up the final sample until 2013 and evaluated the cu
This paper assesses the relationship between obesity and the job market by focusing on young adults early on in their careers, while considering the factor of gender and the individuals' job qualifications. This study extracted data on high school students for four years from the Korean Education and Employment Panel (from 2010 to 2013), a nationally representative dataset comprising of 2000 middle school students and 4000 high school seniors. The individual-level fixed effects were controlled u
