About the Lab
Professor Eunhyuk Im's research lab specializes in the critical analysis of fashion as a cultural and aesthetic phenomenon, focusing on the symbolic and structural relationship between the human body and clothing. The lab explores how fashion reconfigures bodily identity through concepts such as bodily constraint (e.g., skinny jeans as modern corsets), bodily absence or re-presentation (e.g., via simulation theory), and spatial innovation (e.g., origami-inspired flat-plane design). Central to the lab’s work is the interdisciplinary investigation of fashion’s intersections with fine arts, architecture, and philosophical theory—particularly in how avant-garde and contemporary fashion challenge or reframe bodily norms and spatiality.

15Clothes and human body are inseparably related. Aesthetic consciousness of the body determines the form of clothing, reflecting the time and culture as well as the individual and society. Clothes can even reorganize the meaning of the body, while transcending their instru- mental functions of protecting, expanding and deforming the body. Using 'body' to analyze the clothing form, my study develops a framework by which to classify the planarization of the body in Japanese avant-garde fashion. In
The recent craze for so-called skinny jeans is illustrative of the restraint of the body through dress. This phenomenon is noteworthy when considering the internalization of the corset in contemporary fashion. Grown out of the garments of soundly practical use, blue jeans have led the stream of fashion for about 150 years and now they serve as the new corset idealizing the female body in the form of skinny jeans. This study intends to examine the idealization of the body in contemporary fashion
Throughout the history of fashion and fashion collections, fashion design has been influenced by fine arts. Philosophy and concept of fine arts has been inspiration on the development of fashion design which brings on the close interrelation between fine arts and modern fashion. In order to analyze the affect of fine arts such as Pop art on fashion this study inquires into new perspective that considers different social contexts on the premise that acknowledges the essential difference between t
The paper-folding effect of origami signifies a planarization of the body which questions the three dimensional construction of the body in a more conventional clothing system. Un-structured, variable space posited between the body and clothes, and an absence of gender identification characterizes the planarization of the body. Origami inspiration in fashion stresses a will-to-form rather than mere bodily proportion and structure, which explores a trans-extensity that goes beyond the boundary of

Unlike the past, when fashion brands adopted unilateral communication with their consumers, the brands today have recognized the importance of bi-lateral communication. This has led to the companies producing fashion films as a means to elicit a consensus in opinion between the brands and the consumers. Such fashion films should be understood as films using fashion that transcends time, and also as a type of fashion media. This study, which is based upon the understanding that fashion films are
Conventions that draw inspirations from non-Western culture to create new designs have been generalised and used as a design development method in contemporary fashion. However, discussions on appropriation in fashion become urgent when minority cultures are being exploited with an unintended image and commercialisation. This study analysed formative characteristics of four non-Korean brand collections that used hanbok as a motif and presented criteria for distinguishing cultural appropriation f
As style is the center of subcultural identity and the clothes and adornments are the most visible symbol of its membership, the style of Goth symbolizes the strong subcultural identity and acts as the practical basis to demonstrate commitment to the subculture. In the turn of the third millennium, fashion designers have drawn upon and extracted elements from many subcultures to use in their collections. High fashion designers have introduced the Goth style since its inception in the 1980s. The

This study represents "an artialization of fashion" that may be regarded similar to art with a focus on luxury fashion brands. In the <TEX>$20^{th}$</TEX> century, fashion began to share a similar language with art and became a central part in popularizing art. Fashion and art were drawn to each other in mutual fascination. Fashion studies arouse from disciplines like anthropology, sociology and art history as well as from aesthetic experiences and commercial characteristics. Fashion is very com
