About the Lab

Professor Eunseon Kim's research lab focuses on gastrointestinal and metabolic diseases, with a strong emphasis on endoscopic interventions, colorectal cancer management, and the pathophysiology of chronic conditions such as obesity and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The lab investigates complications of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), including perforation, and explores predictive factors and protective strategies in surgical outcomes. It also examines the role of medicinal plants and proteomic mechanisms in metabolic and renal diseases, aiming to identify novel therapeutic targets. Additionally, the lab contributes to understanding respiratory complications in cancer patients and the impact of lung function on postoperative outcomes.

Factors predictive of perforation during endoscopic submucosal dissection for the treatment of colorectal tumors
Eun Sun Kim, K. Cho, Kihoon Park, Kang-Kook Lee, Byoung Kuk Jang, Woo Jin Chung, J. Hwang
SJR Q1EndoscopyOA

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Although perforation of the colon is known as one of the main complications of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for colorectal tumor management, factors predictive of perforation have not been fully evaluated. This study aimed to determine the factors associated with perforation during colorectal ESD. METHODS: Patients with colorectal tumors undergoing ESD were enrolled and their records were reviewed retrospectively. Age, sex, co-morbidity, medication history, procedur

SJR Q1International Journal of COPDOA

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate whether the prevalence of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is even higher in the early stages of COPD than in such patients with normal lung function and to verify the usefulness of symptom- or quality of life (QoL)-based scores in predicting risk for PPCs. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients undergoing pulmonary resection for NSCLC between July 2012 and October 2014 were prospectively enrolled. P

Obesity is a chronic disease that is associated with significantly increased levels of risk of a number of metabolic disorders. Despite these enhanced health risks, the worldwide prevalence of obesity has increased dramatically over the past few decades. Obesity is caused by the accumulation of an abnormal amount of body fat in adipose tissue, which is composed mostly of adipocytes. Thus, a deeper understanding of the regulation mechanism of adipose tissue and/or adipocytes can provide a clue fo

A Case of Intestinal Behcet's Disease Similar to Crohn's Colitis

SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

Behcet's disease is a multi-systemic vasculitis and characterized by systemic organ involvement. Although the gastrointestinal and systemic features of Behcet's disease and inflammatory bowel disease overlap to a considerable extent, they are generally viewed as two distinct diseases. A 39-yr-old female was diagnosed as having Behcet's disease. She was admitted to our hospital because of oral and genital ulcer, lower abdominal pain, and frequent diarrhea. Colonoscopy showed diffuse involvement o

Explainable Artificial Intelligence in the Early Diagnosis of Gastrointestinal Disease
Kwang‐Sig Lee, Eun Sun Kim
SJR Q2DiagnosticsOA

This study reviews the recent progress of explainable artificial intelligence for the early diagnosis of gastrointestinal disease (GID). The source of data was eight original studies in PubMed. The search terms were “gastrointestinal” (title) together with “random forest” or ”explainable artificial intelligence” (abstract). The eligibility criteria were the dependent variable of GID or a strongly associated disease, the intervention(s) of artificial intelligence, the outcome(s) of accuracy and/o

Stroke is one of the commonest causes of death with limited treatment options. L-Carnosine has shown great promise as a neuroprotective agent in experimental stroke, but translation to the clinic is impeded by the large doses needed. We developed and evaluated the therapeutic potential of a novel delivery vehicle which encapsulated carnosine in lipoprotein receptor related protein-1 (LRP-1)-targeted functionalized polymersomes in experimental ischemic stroke. We found that following ischemic str
