About the Lab

Professor Ga-Ram Lim's research lab specializes in the development and characterization of advanced metallic materials, with a focus on metallic glasses, bulk metallic glass matrix composites, and in-situ eutectic composites. The lab investigates the effects of processing parameters—such as cooling rate and thermal history—on microstructure evolution, phase formation, and mechanical properties, particularly in relation to oxidation behavior and strengthening mechanisms. A key research direction involves the design of nano- and micro-scale reinforced composites to enhance both strength and ductility in metallic glass systems.

나노 준결정상으로 강화된 Ti계 벌크 비정질기지 복합재의 제조 및 기계적 특성 고찰
박진만, 임가람, 김태응, 손성우, 김도향

In-situ quasicrystalline icosahedral (I) phase reinforced Ti-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) matrix composites have been successfully fabricated by using two distinct thermal histories for BMG forming alloy. The BMG composite containing micron-scale I-phase has been introduced by controlling cooling rate during solidification, whereas nano-scale I-phase reinforced BMG composite has been produced by partial crystallization of BMG. For mechanical properties, micron-scale I-phase distributed BMG co

Al-Ag2Al 공정계 합금의 조성 및 냉각 속도에 따른 미세조직 고찰
손성우, 김태응, 임가람, 김원태, 김도향, 박진만

In the present study the effect of cooling rate during solidification on the microstructural characteristics of Al-xAg (x= 31, 33, 35 at.%) in-situ binary eutectic composites has been investigated. To provide a wide range of cooling rate three different casting techniques, i.e. conventional casting, injection casting, and melt spinning have been used. The observed microstructure is very much dependent on the cooling rate. The fcc α-Al and hcp Ag2Al phases exhibits an orientation of (111)Al//(000

Purpose: The SpyGlass DS II Direct Visualization System (SpyDS) is increasingly used as an alternative to percutaneous transhepatic cholangioscopy (PTCS) for difficult bile duct stones (DBDSs). This study compared clinical outcomes, costs, and post-procedural recovery between SpyDS and PTCS. Materials and Methods: A prospective interventional study was conducted including patients with DBDSs who underwent Spy-DS-guided lithotripsy between December 2020 and December 2022. Patients treated with PT

Characterization of the Oxide Layer Formed on the Cu-Zr Based Metallic Glass during Continuous Heating
임가람, 김원태, 김도향

In the present study, the oxidation behavior of Cu50Zr50 and Cu46Zr46Al8 metallic glasses has been investigated using transmission electron microscopy with a particular attention on the oxidation behavior in the supercooled liquid state. Identifi cation of the oxidation product after continuous heating treatment shows that in Cu50Zr50 metallic glass, ZrO2 with the monoclinic structure forms on the supercooled liquid as well as on the crystallized matrix. On the contrary, in Cu46Zr46Al8 metallic
