About the Lab
Professor Geunhwan Ahn's research lab specializes in ovarian and pulmonary pathology, with a focus on the molecular and immunohistochemical characterization of rare and aggressive tumors. The lab investigates the roles of adhesion molecules, tight junction proteins, and tumor markers in ovarian serous neoplasms, granulosa cell tumors, and low-grade serous carcinomas to improve diagnostic accuracy and clinical prognosis. Additionally, the lab explores the pathological features and biological behavior of rare lung tumors such as sclerosing hemangiomas, contributing to a better understanding of their clinicopathological spectrum. Their work integrates immunohistochemistry, tissue microarray analysis, and molecular profiling to identify biomarkers with diagnostic and prognostic relevance.

15To clarify possible roles of adhesion molecules including E-cadherin, beta- and gamma-catenin, CD44s, CD44v6, CD56, and CD99 in ovarian serous neoplasms, an immunohistochemical study was undertaken for 23 benign, 40 borderline, and 95 malignant ovarian serous neoplasms using tissue microarray (TMA). Significantly reduced expression of E-cadherin, and overexpression of CD44s, CD56, and CD99 were more frequently observed in adenocarcinomas than in benign and borderline tumors. Expression of CD44v6
OBJECTIVE: Anti-inhibin alpha and inhibin/activin betaA subunit and anti-CD99 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have recently been demonstrated to be able to label ovarian granulosa cells; thus, they may be of value in the diagnosis of granulosa cell tumors. The present study aimed to determine what combination of these mAbs may be useful for the differential diagnosis of sex cord-stromal tumors of ovary. DESIGN: Immunohistochemical analyses with anti-inhibin alpha and inhibin/activin betaA subunit a
Tight junction proteins claudin 3 (CLDN3) and claudin 4 (CLDN4) are frequently altered in several human cancers, including ovarian carcinomas. Here, we examined the gene expression of CLDN3 and CLDN4 in various tumors, including 19 normal ovaries and 47 ovarian carcinomas by analyzing Affymetrix HG-U133 array data. Furthermore, a total of 114 ovarian serous tumors, including 10 adenomas, 20 borderline tumors and 84 carcinomas, were analyzed immunohistochemically to confirm the expression of two
A pathologic study was done on four cases of ovarian sex cord tumor with annular tubules. All four tumors occurred in young women (11-24 years of age) and were not associated with the Peutz-Jeghers syndrome. Two patients had evidence of hyperestrinism. One patient who had metastasis to the retroperitoneum, left supraclavicular lymph node, and liver confirmed the malignant potential of this tumor. Gross examination revealed tumors that were solid, yellowish, and unilateral, with varying degrees o
Low-grade serous carcinoma (LGSC) is an uncommon but distinct histologic subtype of ovarian carcinoma. Although the histologic features and natural history of LGSC have been described in the literature, there is no robust correlative study that has specifically addressed histologic features in correlation with clinical follow-up. To refine the criteria for invasion patterns of LGSC and determine additional clinically pertinent morphologic features of LGSC predisposing to a more aggressive clinic
Sclerosing hemangiomas (SH) of the lung are uncommon tumors and are thought to be benign. However, the biologic behavior of this tumor has not yet been characterized adequately. The clinicopathologic features were reviewed and analyzed for 16 cases of SH. The age of the patients ranged from 37 to 73 yr (mean 50.6 yr). There were fifteen female and one male patient. The SH located at the intraparenchyme in 14 cases, the interlobar fissure in one case and the visceral pleura in one case. The size
The clinical and pathological features of 25 serous papillary cystadenomas of borderline malignancy of the broad ligament were analyzed. The ages of the patients ranged from 19 to 67 (average, 32) years. The clinical presentation was lower abdominal pain, pelvic pain or both in five cases, accompanied by menometrorrhagia or amenorrhea in three cases. One patient was thought to have an acute abdominal disorder. The tumors of the remaining 19 patients were discovered either on routine gynecologica
The second and third examples of clear cell carcinoma of the inguinal region arising from endometriosis are reported. In one patient a right inguinal mass was excised along with an inguinal lymph node dissection. The tumor recurred in the retroperitoneum and was removed, and postoperative radiation therapy was administered. The patient died of recurrent tumor after 11 years. The other patient was treated by excision of a left inguinal mass and an inguinal lymph node dissection and was alive with
