About the Lab
Professor Gwang-Won Kim's research lab focuses on endocrine and metabolic diseases, with a strong emphasis on diabetes mellitus and its associated complications, including cancer and thyroid disorders. The lab investigates the interplay between metabolic syndrome, pancreatic function, and oncological outcomes, particularly in the context of live donor kidney transplantation and thyroid nodular disease. Key research directions include the early detection of medullary thyroid cancer, the impact of hemoglobin levels on HbA1c measurement, and the metabolic consequences of partial pancreatectomy in patients with benign pancreatic tumors. The lab integrates clinical epidemiology with advanced diagnostic imaging and biomarker analysis to improve patient outcomes in endocrine and transplant medicine.

15Advanced donor age, but not human leukocyte antigen mismatch, is associated with poorer outcome after live donor kidney transplantation. However, the results of live donor transplantation remain superior to deceased donor kidney transplantation.
High-resolution ultrasonography (US) has made possible the detection of asymptomatic small thyroid nodules. Thyroid incidentalomas have created a clinical dilemma as to how to properly manage such incidental findings. We investigated the prevalence, the clinical and US characteristics, and optimal diagnostic approach to incidentally detected benign and malignant thyroid nodules < 1.5 cm. Retrospective review was done on 1475 patients who had visited Samsung Medical Center, Soul Korea from Januar
Cancer incidence appears to be increased in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). DM represents a risk factor for cancer, particularly hepatocellular, hepatobiliary, pancreas, breast, ovarian, endometrial, and gastrointestinal cancers. In addition, there is evidence showing that DM is associated with increased cancer mortality. Common risk factors such as age, obesity, physical inactivity and smoking may contribute to increased cancer risk in patients with DM. Although the mechanistic p
These results suggested that routine measurement of serum calcitonin is useful in the early detection of MTC among patients with nodular thyroid diseases. Pentagastrin stimulation test may also be a reliable way for evaluating thyroid nodular patients with mild or moderate elevation of serum calcitonin concentrations. However, FNAC was not sensitive in detecting MTC. We recommend routine measurement of serum calcitonin concentration in patients with nodular thyroid diseases.
AIMS/INTRODUCTION: To evaluate whether hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels are affected by hemoglobin level and gender. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was carried out in a sample of 87,284 non-diabetic Koreans without anemia who participated in comprehensive health check-ups between January and December 2009 at the Kangbuk Samsung Hospital Total Healthcare Center in Seoul, Korea. We categorized men and women separately according to fasting plasma glucose and hemoglobin level to carr
Partial (50%-60%) pancreatectomy for benign pancreatic tumors had a major metabolic consequence, especially in patients with prediabetes and high insulin resistance. In this setting, prolonged diabetes-free survival was observed in patients who underwent IAT when a high islet yield per gram of pancreas was achieved.
Studies in rats have shown that brain death decreases beta-cell function and causes islet cell death during islet isolation and transplantation. Because a direct comparison of human islet cells between living and cadaveric donors has not been reported to date, we studied the effects of brain death on islet cell yield. A total of 36 pancreas specimens from 20 living donors and 16 cadaveric donors were used for analysis. Islets were isolated with a Ricordi chamber, and counted as equivalent islet
The DPP-4 inhibitor favorably affects ITx in partially pancreatectomized diabetic mice by increasing the beta cell mass through cell proliferation and inhibition of beta cell apoptosis.
While a few studies have demonstrated the benefit of PEGylation in islet transplantation, most have employed renal subcapsular models and none have performed direct comparisons of islet mass in intraportal islet transplantation using islet magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In this study, our aim was to demonstrate the benefit of PEGylation in the early post-transplant period of intraportal islet transplantation with a novel algorithm for islet MRI. Islets were PEGylated after ferucarbotran label
