About the Lab

Professor Gwangdae Hong's research lab specializes in colorectal and gastrointestinal surgery, with a strong focus on improving diagnostic accuracy and surgical outcomes in colorectal cancer and complex abdominal conditions. The lab investigates prognostic biomarkers such as CDX2 and lymph node ratio to predict patient survival and guide treatment decisions. It also explores minimally invasive surgical techniques, including laparoscopic surgery for adult intussusception and fecal incontinence, aiming to enhance recovery and quality of life. Additionally, the lab contributes to the diagnosis of challenging conditions like tuberculous peritonitis through advanced endoscopic and clinical approaches.

Lymph node ratio as determined by the 7th edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer staging system predicts survival in stage III colon cancer
Kwang Dae Hong, Sun Il Lee, Hong Young Moon
SJR Q1Journal of Surgical Oncology

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic usefulness of the lymph node ratio (LNR) in stage III colon cancer using the 7th edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system. METHOD: We analyzed data from 130 consecutive patients with stage III colon cancer. Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazard model analyses were used to evaluate prognostic effects. RESULTS: Quartile analysis indicated that an LNR of 0.1638 was the best cut-off valu

Comparison between Laparoscopy and Noninvasive Tests for the Diagnosis of Tuberculous Peritonitis
Kwang Dae Hong, Sun Il Lee, Hong Young Moon
SJR Q1World Journal of Surgery

BACKGROUND: Despite recent progress, the fast and accurate diagnosis of tuberculous peritonitis (TBP) continues to be a challenge, mainly because of the lack of specific clinical features and the difficulty in isolating the M. tuberculosis. The present study aimed to investigate the role of laparoscopy in the diagnosis of TBP, compared to noninvasive tests. METHODS: We retrospectively studied 60 patients who had diagnostic laparoscopy for suspected TBP between January 2002 and June 2010. RESULTS

The American Surgeon

The homeodomain transcription factor CDX2 directs development and maintenance of normal intestinal epithelium. However, the role of CDX2 in colorectal carcinogenesis is poorly understood. Hence, we investigated the CDX2 expression in patients with colorectal cancer and its relationship to tumor cell proliferation and differentiation and evaluated the role of this molecule as a biologic marker for the prediction of poor patient survival. We retrospectively reviewed 207 patients with colorectal ca

AIM: Intussusception in adults is rare and requires surgery in most cases. While abdominal laparoscopic surgery (LS) is becoming more popular, there are few reports on the outcomes of adult intussusception treated with LS. This study compared the feasibility of LS vs open surgery (OS) for adult intussusception. METHOD: We reviewed retrospectively the medical records of adult patients with intussusception from three tertiary hospitals between 2000 and 2016. The patients were divided into LS and O

What is the best option for failed sphincter repair?
Kwang Dae Hong, G. da Silva, Steven D. Wexner
SJR Q2Colorectal Disease

AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the outcome of various procedures for patients with fecal incontinence following failed sphincteroplasty. METHOD: Patients who underwent surgery for failed sphincteroplasty from January 2000 to June 2011 [corrected] were identified. They were assessed using the Fecal Incontinence Quality of Life (FIQoL) scale and the Cleveland Clinic Florida-Wexner Fecal Incontinence Score (CCFFIS). RESULTS: Fifty-nine patients [97% females; median age 52 (25-81) years] were ide

Aberrant activation of the hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway is associated with tumorigenesis in various tissues. In colorectal cancer (CRC), evidence for Hh activation is inconsistent, and the relationship between the Hh signaling pathway and lymphangiogenesis has not been studied. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between Hh signaling and lymphangiogenesis and the association of this relationship with lymph node metastasis in CRC. We investigated 189 patients who underwent

SJR Q3Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether balneotherapy might be effective in patients with chronic pelvic pain (CPP) in the short term. This was an open and prospective pilot study. The balneotherapy programme was performed in a spa resort located in Wando Island, Republic of Korea from August 26 2018 to September 1 2018. It consisted of 10 heated seawater baths (38 °C, 20 minutes) and 10 mud-pack applications (40 °C, 10 minutes) for five days. Sixteen patients were enrolled. Upon analysing

For the recurrent rectal prolapse, the perineal approach is used for the old and fragile patients. The postoperative complications and re-recurrence rate between perineal and abdominal approach were not different significantly. No factor including surgical method affected re-recurrence for recurrent rectal prolapse.

Rectal Diverticular Perforation Complicating Diagnostic Colonoscopy: A Case Report and Review of the Literature
Kwang Dae Hong, Sun Il Lee, Hong Young Moon
SJR Q2Journal of Laparoendoscopic & Advanced Surgical Techniques

Abstract The presence of retroperitoneal, mediastinal, and subcutaneous emphysema due to rectal diverticular perforation during diagnostic colonoscopy has not been reported. Further, the management of colonoscopic perforation remains a controversial issue. In this case report, the authors discuss the importance of recognizing this rare complication after colonoscopy and its response to conservative treatment.
