About the Lab

Professor Ha-Na Yoon's research lab focuses on the pathophysiology of lower urinary tract disorders, with a particular emphasis on interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome, overactive bladder, and the impact of chronic stress and metabolic factors on bladder function. The lab investigates cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying persistent uropathogen infections, autophagy in bladder epithelial cells, and neurohormonal changes affecting bladder stability. Using both preclinical models and clinical urodynamic studies, the lab explores the interplay between inflammation, pain sensitization, and lifestyle-related metabolic factors in women’s urological health.

There is a growing consensus that a significant proportion of recurrent urinary tract infections are linked to the persistence of uropathogens within the urinary tract and their re-emergence upon the conclusion of antibiotic treatment. Studies in mice and human have revealed that uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) can persist in bladder epithelial cells (BECs) even after the apparent resolution of the infection. Here, we found that, following the entry of UPEC into RAB27b+ fusiform vesicles i

Diagnostic Value of the Maximum Urethral Closing Pressure in Women With Overactive Bladder Symptoms and Functional Bladder Outlet Obstruction
Su Jin Kim, Hee Jung Choo, Hana Yoon
SJR Q2International Neurourology JournalOA

PURPOSE: Overactive bladder (OAB) is observed in women with functional bladder outlet obstruction (FBOO), as are lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Therefore, we evaluated the urodynamic characteristics of women with storage LUTS and FBOO diagnosed by urodynamic studies (UDS). METHODS: Women (n=108) with storage LUTS and FBOO diagnosed by UDS were included in this study. The urodynamic characteristics of women with FBOO were compared with those of women with OAB (n=34) and stress urinary incon

Sexual pain and IC/BPS in women
Su Jin Kim, Jayoung Kim, Hana Yoon
SJR Q2BMC UrologyOA

Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) and female sexual dysfunction (FSD) are common conditions that substantially reduce women's health. In particular, women with IC/BPS show vulvodynia, a kind of FDS that originates from consistent pain around the vulvar area. There have been many studies attempting to find the underlying mechanisms that induce the chronic pain associated with IC/BPS and vulvodynia and explain why these two conditions often coexist. Proposed theories suggest tha

PURPOSE: We examined the effect of stress on the pathophysiology of bladder stability in terms of enzyme levels, Rho-kinase, and bladder relaxation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 48 female Sprague-Dawley rats were studied in scheduled stress environments for 7, 14, and 28 days; 24 rats were in the control group and 24 rats were in the test (stressed) group. RESULTS: Estrogen decreased significantly whereas testosterone and dopamine increased significantly in the stress group (p<0.05). Rho-ki

Metabolic Syndrome and Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms: Epidemiological Study
Hana Yoon
SJR Q2LUTS Lower Urinary Tract SymptomsOA

Increasing evidence from clinical and epidemiological studies has shown associations between lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and major chronic medical diseases. Recent epidemiological studies have revealed that, to a large extent, lifestyle factors associated with metabolism, such as obesity, physical activity, blood glucose, and diet, contribute substantially to the development of these conditions. Multiple studies have demonstrated strong independent associations between LUTS and component

Necessity and methods of sexual education in the elderly population
Hana Yoon
SJR Q4Journal of Korean Medical AssociationOA

Major improvements in health care have allowed people in the modern era to lead longer, healthier, and more active lives. The current generation of over-60s are more active than previous generations at the same age. In South Korea, the elderly population (65 years of age or older) has grown to more than 14% of the general population, meaning that we are already in the era of an ‘aged society’ and are transitioning into a super-aged society. Therefore, health issues in the elderly population cann

Pharmacologic management of female sexual dysfunction
Hana Yoon, Kwangsung Park
SJR Q4Journal of Korean Medical AssociationOA

In female sexual dysfunction (FSD), psychological and contextual factors significantly influence organic components of sexual response and behavior. The hormonal environment also affects FSD. Therefore, a tailored medical approach to each individual's sexual symptom is inevitable. This paper reviews currently available pharmacological treatment of FSD including the most recent advances and future targets in pharmacotherapy. In hormonal therapies for FSD, efficacy of estrogens and androgens on th
