About the Lab
Professor Han-ho Kim's research lab focuses on interdisciplinary studies at the intersection of agricultural economics, food science, and emerging technologies. The lab investigates trade dynamics in agricultural products, particularly fruit, using econometric models to analyze the impact of economic and demographic factors. It also explores innovative food preservation techniques, such as high hydrostatic pressure treatment, to enhance food quality and safety. Additionally, the lab engages in applied research on renewable energy forecasting and augmented reality applications in gaming and education, emphasizing data-driven modeling and technological innovation.

15This study uses a single-country gravity model approach to analyze the main factors affecting the trade flows of five fruit products in Korea. The empirical model is applied with the trade data for the period 1991-2007. The study constructs and estimates a random-effect panel tobit model. The results reveal that fruit trade in Korea is influenced by the trade partner's per capita GDP, distance from Korea, and the number of Korean immigrants. Unlike the existing works, distance is negatively corr
Potential size of Market for horse riding activity is estimated in the situation that no empirical data is available. The estimation is based on Ordered Response Model with consumers survey data. Results indicate that the potential market size is pretty considerable and raising the degree of consumer's recognition of horse riding activity through public relations is important in order to expand the market size.
Korean agriculture has been facing several structural problems resulting from rapid structural changes since 1960's, some of which are preventing a smooth policy reform in accordance with the WTO regime. Political burden from rice monoculture, policy ineffectiveness from too large farm employment, and inflexibility in policy options from high dependency of farm household income on farm income are pointed out and discussed in detail.
In this study, the physicochemical changes related to fishy smell were determined by storing high hydrostatic pressure (HHP)-treated mackerel (<i>Scomber japonicus</i>) meat in a refrigerator for 20 days. The inhibition of crude urease activity from <i>Vibrio parahaemolyticus</i> using HHP treatment was also investigated. The mackerel meat storage experiment demonstrated that production of trimethylamine (TMA) and volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), the main components of fishy smell, was significant
After the Pokemon game became popular, the popularity of the Augmented Reality game is higher than ever.
We investigated the effects of policy reform, industrial transformation, and initial conditions on the agricultural productivity changes in 28 transition countries. Our findings are: (i) Asian and CEE transition countries performed better than CIS countries, while the performance improvement of CEE countries seems to be more prominent compared to that of Asian and CIS countries; (ii) The technical progress proved to be the main source of productivity growth, particularly in CEE countries; (iii)
The purpose of this study was to investigate children's(K-5) conceptions about light in Korea. The two aspect of children's conceptions about light were identified : the sources of light, the nature of vision. Data were collected from 92 children by a mixture of writing, drawing and interview, and were analysed by systematic networks. The major findings of this study were as follows : 1. Children showed an awareness of a wide variety of sources of light. The predominant sources exampled by child
The purpose of this study was to analyze science teaching models: Cognitive Conflict Teaching Model(CCTM), Generative Learning Model(GLM), Learning Cycle Model(LCM), Hypothesis-Testing Model(HTM), and Discovery Teaching Model(DTM). Using literature review, the models were analyzed and compared in several aspects; philosophical and psychological bases, primary goals and assumptions, syntax, implementation environments, and probable effects. The major finding were as follows; 1. Science teaching m
Despite many common features in agricultural sector, Korea and Japan have passed through quite different paths of structural adjustment. An important consequence of the different structural adjustment paths is full-time vs. part-time based farming system. As far as policy reforms are concerned, full-time based Korean agriculture has much more barriers to smooth policy reform mainly due to the income-related problems. With high level of off-farm income, farm household income problem is not a grea
Relying on frontier production approach (e.g., Luenberger's shortage function), we investigated the performance of agricultural sector in transition countries and its changes over time, especially focusing on the dynamics of productivity changes. We found that; (i) CEE countries have improved their performance during the sample period whereas CIS have not; (ii) productivity changes in the last decade was attributable to the technical progress; (iii) overall performance was decelerated for the se
The aims of this study are to analyze the patterns of energy consumptions in agriculture, forestry and fishery sectors (AFF sectors hereafter) and to identify the deterministic factors underlying the changes in the patterns during the last two decades, particularly since 1995. The analysis includes indirect energy consumptions in other sectors induced by the production of AFF sectors as well as direct energy consumptions in the sectors, which differentiates this study from previous ones. In addi
Knowledge spillover is a kind of externality originating from imperfect appropriation of R&D performances, which implies that the knowledge created by one agent could be transmitted to other related agents by affecting their R&D or other economic performances. For the estimation of knowledge spillover effects based on firm-level patent data between firms in bio-related industries, patents production function, as a proxy of knowledge production function, is formulated and estimated. Knowledge spi
