About the Lab

Professor Hee Jin Jeong's research lab specializes in infectious disease epidemiology, antimicrobial resistance, and public health interventions, with a strong focus on bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, and influenza. The lab investigates antibiotic susceptibility patterns, the impact of non-pharmaceutical interventions like social distancing on respiratory virus transmission, and the role of vaccination in military and community health. Their work integrates clinical microbiology with population-level surveillance to inform public health policy and improve infectious disease control.

With increase of multi-drug resistant Escherichia coli in community-acquired urinary tractinfections (CA-UTI), other treatment option with a therapeutic efficacy and a low antibioticselective pressure is necessary. In this study, we evaluated in vitro susceptibility of E. coliisolates from CA-UTI to fosfomycin (FM), nitrofurantoin (NI), temocillin (TMO) as well astrimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (SMX), ciprofloxacin (CIP) and cefepime (FEP). Theminimal inhibitory concentrations were determined by E

Social distancing has been adopted as one of basic protective measures against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). During 2019–2020 season, influenza epidemic period was exceptionally short and epidemic peak was low in comparison with previous seasons in Korea. Influenza epidemic pattern was bimodal in 2016–2017 and 2018–2019 seasons, however, influenza viruses have rarely been circulating in spring, 2020 in Korea. Although multiple factors could affect the size of influenza epidemic, extensive

Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is an ascitic fluid infection as a complication of end stage liver disease. The outcome is related to the severity of hepatorenal func-tion, gastrointestinal bleeding, and many others; however it is not well known whether the infection acquisition sites have an effect on the prognosis of SBP. In order to identify the prognostic significance of the acquisition sites, we studied 106 patients who were diagnosed as culture positive SBP between October 1998 and

Serosurveillance studies reveal the actual disease burden and herd immunity level in the population. In Seoul, Korea, a cross-sectional investigation showed 0.07% anti-severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 antibody seropositivity among 1,500 outpatients of the university hospitals. Low seroprevalence reflects well-implemented social distancing. Serosurveillance should be repeated as the pandemic progresses.

Vaccination Policy in Korean Armed Forces: Current Status and Future Challenge

Journal of Korean Medical Science

Infectious diseases have historically resulted in suspended or cancelled military operations. Vaccination for disease prevention is a critical component of the military’s force readinessdoctrine. Until recently, Korea had not recognized the importance of vaccinating militarypersonnel. However, a 2011 meningococcal disease outbreak at an army recruit trainingcenter led to dramatic changes in the paradigm of traditional medical practice in theKorean armed forces. A new vaccination policy was forme

Though the 2009 worldwide influenza A (H1N1) pandemic has been declared to have ended, the influenza virus is expected to continue to circulate from some years as a seasonal influenza. A rapid antigen test (RAT) can aid in rapid diagnosis and allow for early antiviral treatment. We evaluated the clinical usefulness of RAT using SD Bioline Influenza Antigen Test^® kit to detect the influenza virus, considering various factors. From August 1, 2009 to October 10, 2009, a total of 938 patients who v

In 2007, the Korean Society of Infectious Diseases recommended an immunization schedule for adults residing in Korea. This recommendation includes four categories: standard immunization for healthy persons, supplementary immunization for persons with underlying illnesses, recommendations for health-care personnel and for international travelers. The Standard Immunization Schedule consists of universal vaccination (tetanus-diphtheria/tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis (Td/ Tdap); hepatitis A vaccine fo

We conducted an epidemiologic study to understand temporal and spatial patterns of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in the Republic of Korea (ROK). We estimated the incidence among civilians in endemic areas through the active surveillance system during the major epidemic periods, from September to Decem-ber, between 1996 and 1998. We also estimated the prevalence among Korean military personnel from 1995 to 1998. In addition, we assessed seroprevalence, sub-clinical infection rate,

Discovery of Orally Bioavailable Phthalazinone Analogues as an ENPP1 Inhibitor for STING-Mediated Cancer Immunotherapy

A lack of the T cell-inflamed tumor microenvironment limits the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). Activation of stimulator of interferon genes (STING)-mediated innate immunity has emerged as a novel therapeutic approach in cancer therapy. 2′,3′-Cyclic GMP–AMP (cGAMP) is a natural STING agonist; however, cGAMP is subjected to endogenous degradation by ecto-nucleotide pyrophosphatase phosphodiesterase 1 (ENPP1). To improve the ICI response rate, we developed 29f, a novel ENPP1 inhib

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is an acute viral respiratory illness with high mortality caused by a new strain of betacoronavirus (MERS-CoV). Since the report of the first patient in Saudi Arabia in 2012, large-scale outbreaks through hospital- acquired infection and inter-hospital transmission have been reported. Most of the patients reported in South Korea were also infected in hospital settings. Therefore, to eliminate the spread of MERS-CoV, infection prevention and control measure

Background: Influenza is a serious illness that causes significant morbidity and mortality, especially in high risk patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate influenza vaccination coverage rate and perceptions of people with chronic disease on vaccination in Korea. Materials and Methods: Patients with diabetes, chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis, and asthma were surveyed. Individual interviews were performed to patients with diabetes visiting the endocrinology department

In an effort to discover novel scaffolds of non-nucleotide-derived Ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase 1 (ENPP1) inhibitors to stimulate the Stimulator of Interferon Genes (STING) pathway, we designed and synthesised pyrrolopyrimidine and pyrrolopyridine derivatives and performed structure-activity relationship (SAR) study. We found <b>18p</b> possessed high potency (IC50 = 25.0 nM) against ENPP1, and activated STING pathway in a concentration dependent manner. Also, in r
