About the Lab
Professor Hee-Seop Shin's research lab focuses on neurovascular disorders and retinal physiology, with a strong emphasis on the pathophysiology of cerebrovascular diseases such as aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and intracranial atherosclerosis. The lab investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying calcium channel function in retinal synaptic transmission, particularly in inherited retinal disorders like congenital stationary night blindness. Additionally, the lab explores immune modulation in cancer and neurological disease, especially the role of interleukin-12 family cytokines in tumor immunity and inflammatory regulation. Their work integrates molecular biology, animal models, and clinical neurology to advance understanding of neurological and vascular pathologies.

15PURPOSE: Mutations in the alpha(1F) subunit of voltage-dependent calcium channels (VDCCs) have been shown to cause incomplete congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB2). The purpose of this study was to dentify which of the four beta subunits of VDCCs participates in the formation of this channel at the photoreceptor synapse and to determine how its absence affects visual processing. METHODS: Mice without each of the four known beta subunits of VDCCs were generated by gene targeting and trans
On the basis of current evidence, complications of stent-assisted coiling for ruptured intracranial aneurysm may be affected by the method of antiplatelet administration.
IL-12p70 plays a pivotal role in regulating the Th1/Th2 balance in the initial stage of immune responses. In contrast, IL-12p40, which is produced excess over IL-12p70, has been known to down-regulate IL-12p70-mediated responses by acting as an antagonist. To investigate in vivo function of IL-12p40, RH7777 rat hepatoma cells were engineered to inducibly express mouse IL-12p40 under the tight control of doxycycline (dox). In the absence of dox, s.c. injection of these cells into syngeneic rat wa
OBJECTIVE Abnormal lateral spread response (LSR) is a typical finding in facial electromyography (EMG) in patients with hemifacial spasm (HFS). Although intraoperative monitoring of LSR has been widely used during microvascular decompression (MVD), the prognostic value of this monitoring is still debated. The purpose of this study was to determine whether such monitoring exhibits prognostic value for the alleviation of LSR after treatment of HFS. METHODS Between January 2009 and December 2013, a
OBJECTIVE: In addition to obliterating the aneurysm using clipping or coiling, decompressive surgery for control of rising intracranial pressure (ICP) is thought to be crucial to prevention of adverse outcomes in patients with poor grade aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). We evaluated the clinical characteristics of patients with poor-grade aSAH, and compared outcomes of aneurysmal clipping with simultaneous decompressive surgery to those of coil embolization followed by decompression. M
Plaque enhancement was significantly higher in patients with symptomatic plaques and may have been affected by the degree of stenosis. A difference in plaque enhancement according to the degree of stenosis has implications for understanding the development of intracranial atherosclerotic plaques.
BACKGROUND: This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the association between antiplatelet resistance and the risk of procedure-related complications in neurovascular interventions. METHODS: We identified relevant articles by searching electronic databases and reviewed the reference lists of selected papers. The risk of adverse events between antiplatelet responders and hyporesponders during neurointervention was compared in eligible clinical studies. Risk ratios (RRs) and 95% CIs were pooled using a
OBJECTIVE: Early rebleeding after coil embolization of ruptured intracranial aneurysms is rare, however serious and fatal results of rebleeding have been reported. We studied the incidence and angiographic and clinical characteristics of rebleeding of ruptured aneurysms occurring in the immediate postoperative period after coil embolization. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed patients who had aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and underwent coil embolization. Patients with dissecting aneurysms,
BACKGROUND: It is important to manage inflammation after craniotomy. It may be prudent to reduce the excessive usage of antibiotics and to add supplementary treatments like acupuncture, which would be effective and safe. However, there are only a few studies available to date on the effects of acupuncture on anti-inflammatory response after craniotomy. The aim of this study was to explore the anti-inflammatory effects of acupuncture in patients after a craniotomy. METHODS: This study was a singl
Chronic subdural hematoma (SDH) is a well-known disease entity and is traditionally managed with surgery. However, when associated with spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH), the treatment strategy ought to be modified, as classical treatment could lead to unwanted consequences. A 59-year-old man presented with a case of SIH that manifested as a bilateral chronic SDH. He developed fatal extensive pneumocephalus and SDH re-accumulation as a complication of burr-hole drainage. Despite applica
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although endovascular therapy for intracranial aneurysms has recently started to replace surgical treatment and literature regarding endovascular therapy's advantages and disadvantages is being published, literature concerning the endovascular treatment of distal posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) aneurysms specifically limited to rupture are lacking. We describe the clinical characteristics of ruptured distal PICA aneurysms, their clinical outcomes, and the stra
Retrograde stenting via the contralateral vertebral artery (VA) is a safe and effective treatment for posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) aneurysm. Many methods, including tip shaping and the looping technique, have been attempted as ways to cross the vertebrobasilar (VB) junction. Here, we introduce an alternative method using a Snare system to overcome the acute-angled VB junction after repeated failures using other techniques. The Snare system was navigated to the proximal basilar art
