About the Lab

Professor Hee-seung Yang's research lab specializes in the development of advanced nanomaterials and sustainable synthesis methods, with a focus on two-dimensional materials like MoS2 and SnS for energy and environmental applications. The lab emphasizes scalable, eco-friendly fabrication techniques—such as polymer-assisted deposition and aqueous chemical transformation—enabling precise control over material thickness and crystal structure. Additionally, the lab contributes to societal science by analyzing the long-term impacts of social policies, particularly in education and mental health, using rigorous econometric methods. Their interdisciplinary work bridges materials science with social science, addressing both technological innovation and societal well-being.

Education, Marriage, and Fertility: Long-Term Evidence from a Female Stipend Program in Bangladesh
Youjin Hahn, Asad Islam, Kanti Ananta Nuzhat, Russell Smyth, Hee-Seung Yang
SJR Q1Economic Development and Cultural Change

In 1994, Bangladesh introduced the Female Secondary School Stipend Program that made secondary education free for rural girls. This paper examines the long-term effects of the stipend program on education, marriage, fertility, and labor market outcomes of women. We find that the stipend increased years of education for eligible girls by 14%–25%. These girls were more likely to get married later and have fewer children. They also had more autonomy in making decisions about household purchases, he

A mono‐component model of carbon mineralization with a dynamic rate constant
Hee-Seung Yang, B.H. Janssen
SJR Q1European Journal of Soil Science

Summary The difficulties in using complicated models of carbon mineralization and the poor performance of simple ones call for new models that are simple in use and robust in performance. We have developed a model for the mineralization of carbon from experimental data in which the organic matter is treated as a single component. The logarithm of the average relative mineralization rate, K , or rate constant, of a substrate considered as a whole was found to be linearly related to the logarithm

The Werther effect of celebrity suicides: Evidence from South Korea
Jeongmin Ha, Hee-Seung Yang
SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

Since 2003 Korea has experienced the highest suicide rate among OECD countries. One of the societal risk factors that triggers suicide is the contagious nature of suicide. This paper empirically examines the effect of celebrity suicide reports on subsequent copycat suicides, using daily suicide data and information of highly publicized suicide stories in Korea from 2005 to 2018. The findings from the Poisson regression model suggest that the number of public suicides soars after media reports on

SJR Q1RSC Advances

A synthetic route to produce surfactant-free SnS nanoplates with the Pbnm crystal structure is suggested. The process is quick and environmentally-friendly, accomplished under mild aqueous conditions by chemical transformation.

Returns to women’s education using optimal IV selection
Jun Sung Kim, Bin Jiang, Chuhui Li, Hee-Seung Yang
SJR Q2Applied Economics

This paper investigates returns to women’s education by applying an optimal IV selection approach, post-Lasso IV estimation, which improves the first-stage predictive relationship between an endogenous regressor and instruments. Using the 2010 American Community Survey, we find that an extra year of education increases married women’s own income by $4,480 and spouse income by $8,822. Our findings indicate that 53% of the increase in women’s consumption by education is attributed to the marriage

The Characteristics of Technology Management : Korean Manufacturing Firms
Hee-Seung Yang
한국경영과학회 학술대회논문집

As technology innovation has become a competitive weapon in the globalized era, firms are engaged in the development of new products gain competitiveness in the marketplace. One of the main phenomena in a firm's effort to enhance technology development activities is the formation of technology strategy, i.e. the formalization of technology development activities within the firm. This paper explores the practice and management of technology innovation in the Korean manufacturing sector. Based on

The role of uncertainty in forecasting employment by skill and industry
Tutsirai Sakutukwa, Hee-Seung Yang
SJR Q3Applied Economics Letters

We show that the macroeconomic uncertainty series from Jurado, Ludvigson, and Ng (2015) contains information to forecast employment. The results indicate that the uncertainty measure is weak at forecasting the skilled labour but significantly carries forecasting information on the unskilled labour. The forecasting information increases if the sample is restricted to construction and manufacturing industries. Using rolling regressions to conduct a simulated out-of-sample forecasting exercise, we
