About the Lab

Professor Hong Suk Kyun's research lab specializes in advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques, particularly focusing on pure laparoscopic donor hepatectomy for living donor liver transplantation. The lab investigates surgical innovation, patient safety, and long-term outcomes, with a strong emphasis on technical advancements such as 3D laparoscopy and indocyanine green fluorescence cholangiography. Their work contributes significantly to expanding the feasibility and standardization of laparoscopic liver donation, even in complex anatomical variants.

Objective: The aim of the study was to present the safety and feasibility of pure laparoscopic donor right hepatectomy (PLDRH) in comparison with those of conventional donor right hepatectomy. Summary Background Data: Although the use of PLDRH is gradually spreading worldwide, its outcomes, including the long-term outcomes in both donors and recipients, have not yet been evaluated in a large comparative study. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 894 donors who underwent l

BACKGROUND: There may be concerns about purely laparoscopic donor right hepatectomy (PLDRH) compared with open donor right hepatectomy, especially when performed by surgeons accustomed to open surgery. This study aimed to describe technical tips and pitfalls in PLDRH. METHODS: Data from donors who underwent PLDRH at Seoul National University Hospital between December 2015 and July 2017 were analysed retrospectively. Endpoints analysed included intraoperative events and postoperative complication

According to recent international consensus conferences, pure laparoscopic donor hepatectomy (PLDH), particularly right and left hepatectomies, is not yet considered a standard practice because studies remain limited. Thus, we present the outcomes of more than 500 PLDH patients, mostly receiving a right hepatectomy. To our knowledge, this is the largest study to date on PLDH. Data from all living liver donors who underwent PLDH at 5 centers in Korea until June 2018 were retrospectively analyzed.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the long-term mortality of Korean live liver donors using data from a national donor registry by comparing it with the mortality of the general population. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Although live liver donors generally have a healthy status, their long-term mortality has not been properly addressed in a large donor registry. METHODS: Data of 10,116 live liver donors were drawn from a mandated national registry of Korean live liver donors between 2000 and 2015. Matched co

BACKGROUND: Despite increases in the performance of pure laparoscopic living donor hepatectomy, variations in the bile duct or portal vein have been regarded as relative contraindications to this technique [1-3]. This report describes a donor with separate right posterior and right anterior hepatic ducts and portal veins who underwent pure laparoscopic living donor right hemihepatectomy, integrated with 3D laparoscopy and indocyanine green (ICG) near-infrared fluorescence cholangiography [1, 4,

SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

The aim of this study was to compare the clinical outcome and cost-effectiveness of preoperative biliary drainage (BD) methods in periampullary cancer, and to suggest guidelines for selecting the appropriate preoperative BD method. Between October 2004 and August 2010, 211 patients underwent pancreatoduodenectomy after preoperative BD. Clinical outcome and cost-effectiveness of the preoperative BD methods were compared based on the final drainage method used and on intention-to-treat analysis. T

SJR Q1Liver Transplantation

Pure laparoscopic donor hepatectomy (PLDH) has become increasingly accepted in the era of minimally invasive surgeries. However, the outcomes of pure laparoscopic donor left hepatectomy (PLDLH) are relatively less known than for left lateral sectionectomy or right hepatectomy. This study aimed to report our experience with and the outcomes of PLDLH including the middle hepatic vein (MHV) and to compare these outcomes with conventional donor left hepatectomy (CDLH). The medical records of living

BACKGROUND: Factors of early and late recurrence after curative resection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) may be different. The aim of this study was to identify clinical factors, including liver stiffness measurement (LSM), which are associated with HCC recurrence after curative resection. METHODS: Patients who underwent preoperative LSM and primary curative resection for HCC between October 2015 and May 2018 were retrospectively reviewed, with 1 year as the cut-off between early and late rec
