About the Lab
Professor Hongsung Hwang's research lab focuses on the molecular and genetic mechanisms underlying chronic inflammatory and degenerative diseases, with a particular emphasis on the role of microbiome-host interactions, genetic polymorphisms, and systemic inflammation in conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and fibromyalgia. The lab investigates how host genetic variations—especially in genes like ACE and adiponectin—interact with environmental and microbial factors to influence disease susceptibility, progression, and health-related quality of life. A key research direction involves translating genetic and microbiological findings into clinical biomarkers and personalized medicine approaches for early diagnosis and intervention.
