About the Lab
Professor Hwan Hyun Kwon’s research lab specializes in the historical and sociopolitical dimensions of science and technology in modern Korea, with a particular focus on the intersections of race, colonialism, and biomedical sciences. The lab investigates how scientific knowledge—especially in hematology, genetics, and ecology—was shaped by geopolitical forces such as Japanese colonialism, U.S. foreign aid, and Cold War dynamics. Key research directions include the postcolonial legacy of racial serology, the politics of scientific institutionalization in 1960s South Korea, and the global circulation of ecological and biomedical knowledge. The lab also explores how scientific practices have been entangled with nation-building, anti-communism, and international legitimacy struggles.
