About the Lab

Professor Hwang, Kyu Ri's research lab focuses on women's health, particularly in the areas of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), menopausal hormone therapy, and metabolic and hormonal disorders in women. The lab investigates the clinical, metabolic, and anthropometric characteristics of PCOS subtypes, explores the association between PCOS and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and evaluates the role of vitamin D and insulin resistance in PCOS. The research also extends to breast cancer subtypes and their prognostic implications, highlighting a strong emphasis on endocrine and metabolic health across the female lifespan.

Abstract Purpose: To determine the prognostic roles of breast cancer subtypes in females with operable invasive breast cancer. Experimental Design: Data of 321,958 patients from Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database were analyzed. Breast cancer subtypes were classified into four categories according to the status of hormone receptor (HRc) and HER2: HRc(+)/HER2(−), HRc(+)/HER2(+), HRc(−)/HER2(+), and HRc(−)/HER2(−). Results: Proportions of HRc(+)/HER2(−), HRc(+)/HER2(+), HRc

BACKGROUND: We investigated the differences in anthropometrical, hormonal and insulin resistance parameters according to the subtype of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in Korean women. METHODS: We recruited 166 women with PCOS and retrospectively recruited 277 controls. PCOS was diagnosed by irregular menstruation (IM), polycystic ovary (PCO) and hyperandrogenism (HA). Subjects were divided into four subgroups: the IM/HA/PCO group (n = 87, 52.4%), the IM/PCO group (n = 52, 31.3%), the IM/HA gro

Based on the analysis conducted by the World Health Organization regarding the life expectancy in 35 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, South Korea’s life expectancy is predicted to rank first in the world by 2030, with the life expectancy for women reaching 90.82 years. In other words, the importance of women’s health and the quality of life (QoL) after menopause is increasing. The most effective treatment for vasomotor symptoms (VMS) and genitourinary synd

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is known to be associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). However, most studies investigated the prevalence of NAFLD in obese PCOS patients. AIM: To compare the prevalence of non-obese NAFLD in women with or without PCOS, and to assess an independent association between PCOS and NAFLD in a non-obese Asian cohort. METHODS: This was a case-control study using a prospective PCOS cohort. After subjects with other potential causes of chroni

Our study found no differences in the absolute level of serum vitamin D between PCOS patients and matched controls. Prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was equally common among both patients and controls. Additionally, we did not find any correlations between serum vitamin D level and clinical or metabolic profiles, suggesting that the role of vitamin D in the pathogenesis of PCOS is not yet clear.

The balance between coagulation and fibrinolysis is an essential part in early pregnancy. Mutations in methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene lead to decreased activity of the enzyme and hyperhomocysteinemia, which then induces platelet aggregation by promoting endothelial oxidative damage, possibly resulting in adverse effect on maintenance of pregnancy. We investigated the role of MTHFR single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), C677T and A1298C, in Korean patients with recurrent pregna

We investigated the prognostic influence of androgen receptor (AR) on breast cancer. AR status was assessed using immunohistochemistry with tissue microarrays from 395 operable primary breast cancer patients who received curative surgery. The Kaplan–Meier estimator was used to analyze the survival rates and a log-rank test was used to determine the significance of the differences in survival. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to calculate the hazard ratio (HR) and the 95% confidence in

PROBLEM: To investigate whether the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-γ2 Pro12Ala polymorphism is associated with a risk of advanced-stage endometriosis in a Korean population. METHODS OF STUDY: Case-control study in a collective of 446 patients and 427 controls. The Pro12Ala polymorphism of PPAR-γ2 gene was genotyped using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. RESULTS: The distribution of the PPAR-γ2 Pro12Ala polymorphism w

Pathogenesis of the endometriosis is complex and the etiology is still unclear. The objective of this study was to examine that endometrial gene expression in late secretory phase endometrium differs between patients with and without endometriosis. Five patients with proven advanced-stage endometriosis and 5 controls underwent endometrial biopsy in the late secretory phase. Analysis of eutopic endometrial gene expression was performed using Affymetrix gene arrays and differentially expressed gen
