About the Lab
Professor Hye-Sook Park's research lab focuses on interdisciplinary health and physical sciences, with a strong emphasis on chronic disease epidemiology, multimorbidity patterns in aging populations, and the physiological impacts of environmental and metabolic stressors. The lab investigates the interplay between socioeconomic factors, metabolic syndrome, and health-related quality of life in older adults, while also exploring the biomechanical and physical stabilization mechanisms in extreme conditions, such as high-pressure materials behavior. Recent work includes studies on air pollution effects on school absenteeism and the role of obesity and insulin resistance in colorectal precancerous lesions.

15Experimental results showing significant reductions from classical in the Rayleigh-Taylor instability growth rate due to high pressure effective lattice viscosity are presented. Using a laser created ramped drive, vanadium samples are compressed and accelerated quasi-isentropically at approximately 1 Mbar peak pressures, while maintaining the sample in the solid state. Comparisons with simulations and theory indicate that the high pressure, high strain rate conditions trigger a phonon drag mecha
Air pollution is associated with illness-related absences among elementary students.
INTRODUCTION: Multimorbidity associated with significant disease and economic burdens is common among the aged. We identified chronic disease multimorbidity patterns in Koreans 50 years of age or older, and explored whether such patterns were associated with particular sociodemographic factors and health-related quality-of-life. METHODS: The multimorbidity patterns of 10 chronic diseases (hypertension, dyslipidemia, stroke, osteoarthritis, tuberculosis, asthma, allergic rhinitis, depression, dia
Obesity and insulin resistance are associated with the risk of colon cancer. Adenomatous colonic polyps are precancerous lesions of colon cancer. We investigated whether BMI and the metabolic syndrome are associated with the presence of adenomatous colonic polyps in Korean men. Anthropometric measurements, metabolic risk factors, and colonoscopic pathologic findings were assessed in 1,898 men who underwent routine colonoscopy at the Health Promotion Center of Asan Medical Center in 2005. The mod
BACKGROUND: Back pain causes considerable morbidity, disability, and economic loss among workers. Farmers handle heavy objects, often in awkward postures. However, the prevalence of back pain among farmers and the risk factors associated with back pain are not well known. METHODS: In this study, we assess the frequency of risk factors for back pain among 287 Iowa male farmers. From 1992 to 1994, using a mail questionnaire, we collected data on potential risk factors for back pain. Eighteen month
BACKGROUND: Multimorbidity negatively affects health outcomes and impairs health-related quality of life (HRQoL). We assessed the prevalence of multimorbidity in Koreans aged 50 and older, taking into consideration their socioeconomic status, and estimated the loss in HRQoL due to multimorbidity. METHODS: This study is based on an analysis of data for adults aged 50 and older derived from the cross-sectional nationally representative Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conduc
Experimental results showing significant reductions from classical in the Rayleigh–Taylor (RT) instability growth rate due to high pressure effective lattice viscosity in metal foils are presented. Stabilization of RT instability (RTI) by ablation and density gradients has been studied for decades. The regime of stabilized RTI due to material strength at high pressure is new. On the Omega Laser in the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, University of Rochester, target samples of polycrystalline van
Overweight gravidas were associated with low education status, low economic status, and adverse pregnancy, whereas low weight gain during pregnancy was associated with low education status of the gravida and her husband, preterm delivery, and SGA.
The increasing prevalence of childhood obesity is a serious public health problem associated with co-morbidities in adulthood, as well as childhood. This study was conducted to identify associations between total sugar intake and sugar intake from different foods (fruit, milk, and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs)), and adiposity and continuous metabolic syndrome scores (cMetS) among Korean children and adolescents using cohort data. The study subjects were children (n = 770) who participated in
