About the Lab

Professor Hye Yeon Park's research lab focuses on environmental health and developmental toxicology, with a primary emphasis on the neurodevelopmental, immunological, and psychological impacts of prenatal exposure to environmental pollutants such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and traffic-related air pollution. The lab investigates the mechanisms by which these toxins affect fetal and infant development, particularly through biomarkers like hydroxylated PCB metabolites and ultrafine particulate matter. A key research direction involves longitudinal cohort studies in Eastern Slovakia and California to assess long-term health outcomes in children and adults. The lab also explores psychosocial interventions in chronic illness, particularly in breast cancer and chronic pain populations.

Exposure to Hydroxylated Polychlorinated Biphenyls (OH-PCBs) in the Prenatal Period and Subsequent Neurodevelopment in Eastern Slovakia

SJR Q1Environmental Health PerspectivesOA

BACKGROUND: Hydroxylated polychlorinated biphenyls (OH-PCBs), unlike PCBs, are in general readily excreted yet are still detected in humans and animals. Active transport of OH-PCBs across the placenta and hydroxylation of PCBs by the fetus suggest the potential for greater impact on the fetus compared with the parent PCB compounds, but little is known about their health effects, particularly in humans. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to evaluate the associations between prenatal OH-P

Neurodevelopmental toxicity of prenatal polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) by chemical structure and activity: a birth cohort study
Hye Youn Park, Irva Hertz‐Picciotto, Eva Šovčíková, Anton Kočan, Beata Drobná, T. Trnovec
SJR Q1Environmental HealthOA

BACKGROUND: Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are ubiquitous environmental toxins. Although there is growing evidence to support an association between PCBs and deficits of neurodevelopment, the specific mechanisms are not well understood. The potentially different roles of specific PCB groups defined by chemical structures or hormonal activities e.g., dioxin-like, non-dioxin like, or anti-estrogenic PCBs, remain unclear. Our objective was to examine the association between prenatal exposure to d

Prenatal PCB Exposure and Thymus Size at Birth in Neonates in Eastern Slovakia

SJR Q1Environmental Health PerspectivesOA

BACKGROUND: Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are ubiquitous environmental toxicants, for which animal studies demonstrate immunotoxic effects, including thymic atrophy and suppressed immune responses; human investigations of similar end points are sparse. The thymus is essential for the differentiation and maturation of T-cell lymphocytes. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to examine the association between prenatal PCB exposures and estimated thymus volume in infants from eastern Slov

Respiratory outcomes of ultrafine particulate matter (UFPM) as a surrogate measure of near-roadway exposures among bicyclists
Hye Youn Park, Susan Gilbreath, Edward Barakatt
SJR Q1Environmental HealthOA

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown a consistent association between exposure to traffic-related air pollution and adverse health effects. In particular, exposure can be high for cyclists who travel near roadways. The objective of the current study was to examine the relationship between short-term exposure of near-road traffic emissions and acute changes in lung function among individuals who frequently bike in the Sacramento and Davis areas in California. Ultrafine particulate matter (UFPM) was use

SJR Q2European Journal of Cancer CareOA

Treatments for breast cancer often include interventions related to psychosocial issues such as negative body image, loss of femininity, and low self-esteem. We identified the psychological effects of a cosmetics education programme in patients with breast cancer. Cosmetic programme is a specific care designed to help patients handle appearance-related side effects. Thirty-one women with breast cancer at a university hospital in South Korea who received a cosmetics education programme were compa

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated psychological characteristics of patients with chronic complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and examined relationships between psychosocial factors and pain severity. METHODS: In total, 76 patients with CRPS, 95 patients with other types of chronic pain, 171 healthy controls, and 66 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) were included. SJR Q1Integrative Cancer TherapiesOA

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the effects of brief supportive expressive group therapy with mindfulness for cancer patients and to assess the utility of heart rate variability (HRV) as a biomarker of distress and treatment effect. METHODS: A total of 28 female patients with nonmetastatic cancer at a university hospital in South Korea received a 4-week modified group therapy for distress reduction.
