본고는 다문화 관련 한국어교육학 연구의 성과를 점검하고 향후 바람직한 연구 방향성을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 했다. 첫째, 연구사 전반에 걸쳐 시대별 연구의 추이를 진단해 보고, 다음으로는 연구 주제별로 양적 분포를 점검해 보고자 했다. 시대별로는 2006년을 시작으로 하여 2008-2011까지 급격한 양적 팽창을 보였으나, 대상별 연구가 다문화아동과 이주여성에 주로 치우치는 경향이 있었다. 둘째로는 연구사에 나타난 쟁점들을 중심으로 개별 연구에 나타난 연구 결과의 성과를 가늠해 보았는데, 다문화 관련 연구는 일반 연구에 비해 상대적으로 내용학 중심의 기초 연구가 매우 부족했음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 기초 연구보다는 정책이나 현황 연구가 많아서 향후 기초 연구의 필요성이 절실했다.
