About the Lab
Professor Hyeon In Yang's research lab focuses on the pathogenesis and therapeutic interventions of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, particularly rheumatoid arthritis, type 2 diabetes, and systemic lupus erythematosus. The lab investigates the molecular mechanisms of disease progression, with an emphasis on identifying endogenous and exogenous compounds—such as piperine, taurine, and bee venom—that modulate inflammation, immune responses, and metabolic dysfunction. Genetic associations, especially of immune-regulatory genes like PD-1, are also a key focus, particularly in the context of Asian populations. The lab integrates preclinical animal models with translational approaches to evaluate potential therapeutics for chronic inflammatory and metabolic disorders.

15INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to determine the anti-inflammatory, nociceptive, and antiarthritic effects of piperine, the active phenolic component in black pepper extract. METHODS: The in vitro anti-inflammatory activity of piperine was tested on interleukin 1beta (IL1beta)-stimulated fibroblast-like synoviocytes derived form patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The levels of IL6, matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs), cyclo-oxygenase 2 (COX-2), and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) were investi
This study aimed to determine whether taurine supplementation improves metabolic disturbances and diabetic complications in an animal model for type 2 diabetes. We investigated whether taurine has therapeutic effects on glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism, and diabetic complications in Otsuka Long- Evans Tokushima fatty (OLETF) rats with long-term duration of diabetes. Fourteen 50-week-old OLETF rats with chronic diabetes were fed a diet supplemented with taurine (2%) or a non-supplemented cont
INTRODUCTION: The role of adiponectin in the pathogenesis of arthritis is still controversial. This study was performed to examine whether adiponectin is involved in joint inflammation and destruction in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in relation to the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). METHODS: Synovial cells from RA patients were treated with adiponectin or interleukin (IL)-1beta for 24 hours. The culture supernatant was collected and anal
Bee venom (BV) has been used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation in traditional Oriental medicine, especially in chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We previously reported that the BV injection into a traditional acupuncture point (Zusanli) reduced arthritis-associated edema and nociceptive responses in Freund's adjuvant-induced arthritis in rats (Kwon et al., 2001). This study was designed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and anti-cytokine effect of BV on a mur
The PD-1 (programmed death 1) molecule is a negative regulator of T cells. PDCD1 (programmed cell death 1) has been reported to have a genetic association in systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis in Caucasians. However, there are no reports on the association between this gene and ankylosing spondylitis (AS). The present study investigated the association of the PD-1 polymorphisms and the haplotypes with AS in a Korean population sample. In a case-control association study, two s

To determine whether adiponectin may have synergistic effects in combination with the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-1β regarding the production of proinflammatory mediators during arthritic joint inflammation, synovial cells from rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients were treated with adiponectin, IL-1β, and their combination for 24 h. Culture supernatant was collected and analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for levels of IL-6, IL-8, prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)), vascular endot
This study was performed to evaluate the contribution of adiponectin to the production of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 and MMP-13 in human endothelial cells and osteoblasts in arthritic joints. Cultured human umbilical vascular endothelial cells (HUVECs) and osteoblasts were stimulated with adiponectin (1 or 10 μg ml−1) or IL-1β (0.1 ng ml−1) in the presence or absence of hypoxia for 24 h. The protein expression patterns we
OBJECTIVES: To further understand the expression regulation of MMP-1 and MMP-13 under physiological and pathological conditions, we investigated the combined effects of hypoxia and pro-inflammatory stimuli on the expression of MMP-1 and MMP-13 in rheumatoid synovial fibroblasts. METHODS: Synovial fibroblasts were cultured under either hypoxic or normoxic conditions in the presence of IL-1β stimulation. The culture supernatant was analysed for secreted levels of VEGF, MMP-1 and MMP-13. Their gene
