About the Lab
Professor Hyeon-Woong Lee's research lab specializes in hepatology and viral hepatitis, with a strong focus on chronic hepatitis B and C virus infections. The lab investigates antiviral therapies, including lamivudine and thymosin alpha-1 combinations, to achieve sustained virologic responses. It also explores the role of repurposed drugs like statins in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and the antiviral potential of medicinal plant compounds. The lab integrates clinical research with translational approaches to identify biomarkers and optimize treatment strategies.

15UNLABELLED: The reported durability of virologic response after successful lamivudine monotherapy is variable, and the question remains as to whether virologic responses can be maintained over an extended follow-up period. The aim of this study was to investigate posttreatment durability, the optimal duration of additional treatment after HBeAg clearance or seroconversion, and determinants for sustained virologic response (SVR) following lamivudine monotherapy in patients with HBeAg-positive chr
INTRODUCTION: The use of statins in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) may reduce cardiovascular morbidity, although their effect on NAFLD itself is not well known. We aimed to investigate the role of statins on the development of de novo NAFLD and progression of significant liver fibrosis. METHODS: This study included 11,593,409 subjects from the National Health Information Database of the Republic of Korea entered in 2010 and followed up until 2016. NAFLD was diagnosed by calculating fat
Medicinal herbs are increasingly used in the search for safe and efficient drug candidates for hepatitis C virus infection. In this study, we have investigated the anti-HCV effect of compounds from Mori Cortex Radicis. During a screening for extracts with anti-HCV affinity from medicinal plants (173 species), the methanol extract of Mori Cortex Radicis was selected. Fractionation of the extract by monitoring antiviral activity with a replicon cell-based assay resulted in the isolation of five co
BACKGROUND: Hemorrhage from the pancreatic duct, or hemosuccus pancreaticus (HP), is an unusual cause of intermittent gastrointestinal bleeding. HP is most often diagnosed in patients with chronic pancreatitis, and is usually due to the rupture of an aneurysm in the splenic artery. The traditional treatment for HP is surgery, although most cases can be managed by angioembolization. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of HP in a patient with no history or evidence of chronic pancreatitis. Repeat
Clinical factors including age, peak creatinine, bilirubin, ALT, initial LDH and total cholesterol were independent factors for s-AH in a multivariate analysis. In particular, HAV load strongly correlated with the severity of hepatitis A.
BACKGROUND AND AIM: Monotherapy of lamivudine, interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha), and thymosin alpha-1 (Talpha1) is unlikely to be sufficient for the eradication of a chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. The aim of our study is to elucidate whether the combination of Talpha1 and lamivudine is superior to lamivudine monotherapy in hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) positive naïve patients with chronic hepatitis B. METHODS: Sixty-seven patients were assigned to two different groups in a randomized man
BACKGROUND: This retrospective analysis was undertaken to evaluate the efficiency of SIRT with Y-90 microspheres and determined prognostic factors affecting patients with unresectable HCC. METHODS: A total of 97 patients diagnosed with unresectable HCC who underwent SIRT with Y-90 microspheres. Patient survival was assessed using the Kaplan-Meier method, and prognostic factors affecting survival were assessed using log-rank tests and Cox proportional hazards regression. RESULTS: Among the 97 pat
New direct acting antiviral treatment achieved high SVRs rates at 12 weeks in CHC patients with hemophilia without serious adverse events.
Cirrhosis has prognostic value. We investigated whether the combined use of ultrasonography (US) and transient elastography (TE) to diagnose cirrhosis is beneficial for the risk assessment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and liver-related events in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). A total of 9300 patients with CHB who underwent US and TE in two institutions between 2006 and 2018 were enrolled. TE value ≥13 kPa was set to indicate cirrhosis. Patients were divided into four groups: US(+)
BACKGROUND/AIMS: We investigated the efficiency of the indirect ratio of anti-HBc IgG at predicting HBsAg seroclearance in patients with nucleos(t)ide analogue (NA)-induced HBeAg seroclearance. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study that included 366 chronic hepatitis B patients (March 2007 to December 2016) at a single tertiary hospital. These patients were HBsAg seropositive, and experienced NA-induced HBeAg seroclearance. The indirect ratio of light absorbance of anti-HBc IgG levels were
The aims of this study were to investigate the efficacy of prolonged entecavir (ETV) therapy in treatment-naive chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients and to determine whether continuous ETV therapy is feasible to achieve HBeAg seroconversion, particularly in patients with partial virological response (PVR). A total of 142 treatment-naive patients with CHB were enrolled. The mean duration of treatment was 65 (range, 26 to 90) months, and 86 patients (60.6%) were HBeAg positive. PVR was defined as de
BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) seroclearance has been considered as the treatment endpoint in HBeAg-positive patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Although HBeAg seroclearance has been accomplished, some aspects are yet unclear. We investigated the cumulative incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and evaluated hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) seroclearance in patients undergoing nucleos(t) ide analogue (NA)-induced HBeAg seroclearance. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort
The role of hepatitis B core-related antigen (HBcrAg) level in defining clinical phase and predicting prognosis of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) has not been fully studied. CHB patients who had undergone liver biopsy in Korea University Medical Center were included. Patients with liver cirrhosis were excluded. The associations of HBcrAg level with CHB phase, and nucleos(t)ide analogue (NA)-induced hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) seroconversion were analyzed. In total, 387 patients (median follow-up of
