About the Lab
Professor Hyesook Han's research lab specializes in clinical and translational studies focusing on metabolic regulation, appetite control, and obesity-related mechanisms. The lab investigates neuroendocrine and behavioral factors influencing energy balance, including the impact of pharmacological agents like valproic acid and caloric restriction on appetite hormones and physical activity. It also develops advanced statistical models—such as multi-profile hidden Markov models and two-level regression frameworks—to analyze longitudinal behavioral and psychosocial data in adolescents and families. Additionally, the lab explores cellular mechanisms underlying metabolic disease, including oxidative stress responses in fat-storing cells and hepatocytes.

10The objective of this study was to identify mechanisms through which valproic acid (VPA) causes weight gain. Healthy participants (N = 52) were randomized to VPA or placebo in a double-blind study. Energy intake (EI) was measured in the laboratory at lunch and dinner, and physical activity (PA) was measured with accelerometry. Glucose levels and hormones [Peptide YY(3-36), glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), leptin, ghrelin, insulin] that regulate EI were measured. Assessments occurred at baseline
BACKGROUND: Energy or calorie restriction (CR) has consistently been shown to produce weight loss and have beneficial health effects in numerous species, including primates and humans. Most individuals, however, are unable to sustain weight losses induced through reductions in energy intake, potentially due to increased hunger levels. The effects that prolonged CR has on subjective aspects of appetite have not been well studied. Thus, the present study tested the effect of 6 months of caloric re
Motivated by an application to childhood obesity data in a clinical trial, this paper describes a multi-profile hidden Markov model (HMM) that uses several temporal chains of measures respectively related to psychosocial attributes, dietary intake, and energy expenditure behaviors of adolescents in a school setting. Using these psychological and behavioral profiles, the model delineates health states from the longitudinal data set. Furthermore, a two-level regression model that takes into accoun
Purpose: We evaluated the validity and reliability of the Korean version of the Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire (K-PBQ) among Korean parents with children under 12 months of age. Methods: The K-PBQ was translated considering Korean cultural validity through translation, back-translation, and expert panel review. Construct validity was tested by conducting both exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with data from 308 couples (N=616). Convergent and discriminant
We studied the effects of the neurotoxin, 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA), on cultured fat-storing cells (FSCs) and hepatocytes. If either FSCs or hepatocytes were exposed to 6-OHDA for 4 hr, the neurotoxicant induced cell death in FSCs but not in hepatocytes. We decided to investigate why hepatocytes were refractile to injury from 6-OHDA while FSCs were labile. The activity of antioxidant enzymes within FSCs grown in vitro is remarkably lower than the activity in hepatocytes. Indeed, some specific a

The purpose of this research was to systematically examine and collate evidence on couple-oriented interventions for mental health to identify trends in the literature, review research strategies, and suggest directions for future research. A systematic search included studies relating to couple-oriented interventions for preventing mental disorders and/or promoting mental health. We identified a total of 52 studies, which included 55 articles. Our findings revealed that interventions were deliv
