About the Lab
Professor Hyewon Jeong's research lab focuses on translational biomedical research, integrating genomics, systems biology, and clinical pharmacology to understand the genetic and metabolic underpinnings of complex diseases. Key research directions include identifying novel genetic markers for reproductive disorders such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), elucidating metabolic reprogramming in cancer—particularly triple-negative breast cancer—and investigating drug metabolism, pharmacokinetics, and safety profiles of therapeutics in metabolic and neuropsychiatric conditions. The lab employs multi-omics approaches and clinical trial designs to bridge molecular mechanisms with clinical applications.

15STUDY QUESTION: Are there any novel genetic markers of susceptibility to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)? SUMMARY ANSWER: We identified a novel susceptibility locus on chromosome 8q24.2 and several moderately associated loci for PCOS in Korean women. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: PCOS is a highly complex disorder with significant contributions from both genetic and environmental factors. Previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in the Han Chinese population identified several risk loci for PCOS
We must monitor for the presence of gynecological and non-gynecological diseases with co-morbidities during evaluations and follow-up of patients with adenomyosis or endometriosis.
Metabolic dysregulation is an important hallmark of cancer. Nicotinamide (NAM), a water-soluble amide form of niacin (vitamin B3), is currently available as a supplement for maintaining general physiologic functions. NAM is a crucial regulator of mitochondrial metabolism and redox reactions. In this study, we aimed to identify the mechanistic link between NAM-induced metabolic regulation and the therapeutic efficacy of NAM in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). The combined analysis using mult
AIMS: Helicobacter pylori (Hp) eradication plays a key role in the treatment and prevention of peptic ulcer diseases. Increasing clarithromycin resistance in Hp necessitates more effective treatments for eradication, such as bismuth-containing quadruple therapy. We aimed to compare the safety and pharmacokinetics (PK) of bismuth between vonoprazan- and lansoprazole-containing quadruple therapy in Hp-positive subjects. METHODS: In this randomised, double-blind, parallel-group study, Hp-positive s
We hypothesized that the pharmacodynamic (PD) characteristics of metformin would change with inhibition of the multidrug and toxin extrusion (MATE) transporter, which mediates renal elimination of metformin. Twenty healthy male subjects received two doses (750/500 mg) of metformin, with and without 50 mg of pyrimethamine (a potent MATE inhibitor), with 1 week of washout in between each dose. The PD characteristics of metformin were assessed using oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTTs) before and a
Prolongation of the QT interval on an ECG is a surrogate marker for predicting the proarrhythmic potential of a drug under development. The aim of this study was to evaluate the QTc prolongation potential of two neuropsychiatric drugs, quetiapine immediate release (IR) and escitalopram, in healthy individuals. This was a randomized, open-label, 4×4 Williams crossover study, with four single-dose treatments [placebo, 400 mg moxifloxacin (positive control), 20 mg escitalopram, and 100 mg quetiapin
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Dilated cardiomyopathy can be the end-stage of severe cardiac disorders and directly affects the cardiac muscle, inducing cardiomegaly and heart failure (HF). Although a wide variety of animal models are available to study dilated cardiomyopathy, there is no model to assess dilated cardiomyopathy with non-invasive, simple, and large screening methods. METHODS: We developed a dilated cardiomyopathy model in zebrafish larvae using short duration terfenadine, a known card
ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02712619.
In conclusion, this study showed similar systemic exposure between the two Theracurmin products. The absorption of curcumin after the administration of Theracurmin was significantly enhanced compared with curcumin powder.
SYP-1018 had comparable pharmacokinetic and tolerability profiles to Vfend(®) after a single intravenous infusion. CYP2C19 genotype affected not only the pharmacokinetics of voriconazole, but its intrasubject variability. SYP-1018 can be further developed as a clinically effective alternative to Vfend(®).
Busulfan is a cytotoxic agent used in preconditioning for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Therapeutic drug monitoring of busulfan is necessary owing to its narrow therapeutic range. Patients undergoing preconditioning are susceptible to infection and might require coadministration of antibiotics. We present a case study of a 3-year-old girl with precursor T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia who received intravenous busulfan before hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Metronidazole w
Histoplasmosis is a very rare disease in Korea. Clinical manifestations are very similar to those of tuberculosis. This is the first case report of combined disseminated histoplasmosis and tuberculosis in a patient with HIV infection in Korea. A 42-year-old Korean with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) was diagnosed with tuberculosis. He had lived in Guatemala for the past five years. Upon diagnosis of disseminated tuberculosis with HIV infection, he was treated with anti-tuberculosis me
Higher risk of major hemorrhage associated with concomitant use of dabigatran and simvastatin compared to other statins was previously reported with a suggestion of P-glycoprotein-mediated interaction. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of simvastatin on pharmacokinetics and anticoagulant effects of dabigatran, a direct oral anticoagulant. A total of 12 healthy subjects were enrolled in an open-label, two-period, single sequence study. Subjects were given 150 mg of dabigatran etex
