About the Lab

Professor Hyoun Woo Kang's research lab focuses on the interplay between body composition, metabolic health, and gastrointestinal diseases. The lab investigates how visceral adiposity, insulin resistance, and sarcopenia contribute to the development of metabolic syndrome, colorectal neoplasms, and functional gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia. Using advanced imaging techniques like CT and clinical epidemiological approaches, the lab explores the pathophysiological links between obesity-related parameters and chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. The research also extends to endoscopic interventions, particularly self-expandable metal stents in benign and malignant upper GI strictures, and vaccine safety, particularly regarding adverse events following COVID-19 vaccination.

Upper Gastrointestinal Stent Insertion in Malignant and Benign Disorders
Hyoun Woo Kang, Sang Gyun Kim
SJR Q2Clinical EndoscopyOA

Upper gastrointestinal (GI) stents are increasingly being used to manage upper GI obstructions. Initially developed for palliative treatment of esophageal cancer, upper GI stents now play an emerging role in benign strictures of the upper GI tract. Because recurrent obstruction and stent-related complications are common, new modifications of stents have been implemented. Self-expandable metal stents (SEMS) have replaced older plastic stents. In addition, newly designed SEMS have been developed t

AIMS: Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a global health problem associated with an increased risk of diabetes mellitus (DM), cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer. Body composition parameters, including obesity, visceral adiposity, and sarcopenia contribute to the development of MS and CVD. Previous studies have investigated the association of individual body composition parameters with MS. Studies analyzing the association between multiple body composition parameters and MS have been rare. We aimed

Visceral adiposity is associated with an increased risk of functional dyspepsia

SJR Q1Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology

BACKGROUND: The relationship between visceral adiposity and the incidence of functional dyspepsia (FD) has not yet been studied. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the association between visceral adiposity and the risk of FD. METHODS: This is a case-control study that compares the abdominal adipose tissue area between subjects with FD and control subjects without FD, who underwent abdomen computerized tomography (CT) for health examinations in a tertiary center. Retrospectively, a

Understanding the diagnostic yield of current endoscopic biopsy for gastric neoplasm
Won Gun Kwack, Won Jin Ho, Jae Hak Kim, Jin Ho Lee, Eo Jin Kim, Hyoun Woo Kang, Jun Kyu Lee
SJR Q3MedicineOA

Although there are general guidelines on endoscopic biopsy for diagnosing gastric neoplasms, they are predominantly based on outdated literature obtained with fiberscopes without analyses specific to tumor characteristics. This study aims to comprehensively characterize the contemporary endoscopic biopsy by determining the diagnostic yield across different lesion morphologies and histological stages, especially exploring how the number and site of biopsy may influence the overall yield.Biopsy sam

SJR Q2Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology

Objectives There are a few studies about the relationship between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and atopic dermatitis (AD). It is implied that both diseases have common pathophysiologic mechanisms and can affect each other. However, little information is available on the effect of AD on the clinical course of patients with IBD.Methods This is a multi-center, retrospective, observational study. We define AD as a chronic eczematoid dermatosis diagnosed by dermatologists. Patients with concurren
