이 글은 교육을 인간 문화의 핵심적 토대로서 이론화하기 위해 교육의 개념 및 속성, 인간 학습과 문화에 있어서의 교육의 역할, ‘사회화’와 ‘교육’의 구분, 문화의 두 차원과 관련한 교육적 과정의 이중성 등을 비판적으로 고찰한다. 또한 교육에 대한 규범적 접근이 가지는 한계를 지적하고, 교육인류학적 연구를 위하여 보다 포괄적이고 현실적인 교육 개념을 제시한다. 이를 위하여 먼저 인간 학습의 특수성을 문화적 학습의 개념으로 살펴보고, 문화적 학습을 촉진하는 활동으로서 교육이 인간 고유의 활동이라는 점을 명확히 한다. 교육은 인간의 종(種) 보편적 행위이지만 특수한 문화적 맥락 속에서 수행되는 바, 교육의 보편성과 특수성의 두 차원은 문화 자체의 두 차원과 관련된다. 따라서 문화에 대한 상보적인 두 개념, 즉 보편주의적 문화 개념과 상대주의적 문화 개념을 검토하고, 이것이 교육의 이중적 차원과 연결되어 있음을 논의한다. 교육은 개인이 문화에 적응하도록 하게 하는 동시에 문화를 새롭게 구

감정은 핵심적으로 자아와 사회적 세계와의 관련에 대한 것이라는 점에서 ‘관계의언어’라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 감정의 인류학을 한다는 것은 무엇보다도 행위자를 관계속에서 느끼는 주체로서 파악하는 데에서 출발하며, 그렇게 함으로써 정의적 과정을 사회문화적 과정의 주요한 측면으로 기술∙분석한다는 것을 의미한다. 이 글에서는 첫째,인류학적 연구를 위한 감정의 개념적 정의를 제시하고 또한 감정의 속성과 기능을 네 국면으로 나누어 고찰한다. 둘째, 각 국면에 대한 고전적인 감정이론을 살펴보고 해당국면에 초점을 맞춘 인류학적 연구들을 예시한다. 그리하여 감정을 인류학적 연구의 한 영역으로, 민족지 서술의 중요한 측면으로 자리매김하는 데 기초를 세우고자 한다.

이 글은 미국 교사들이 공유하는 창의성에 대한 문화적 정의는 무엇이며, 창의성을 계발하기 위해 교사들이 실제로 무엇을 어떻게 하는지를 살펴본다. 이 사례 연구는 미국 중서부의 한 도시에 위치한 공립 중학교에서 행한 민족지적 현지조사에 바탕을 두고, 미국 사회에서 “자아 표현”에 두는 문화적 가치가 창의성 교육의 중요한 토대가 됨을 보여준다. 자아의 창의적 표현은 개인주의의 문화심리에서 이상적으로 추구하는 사람됨, 즉 “개인”의 표식으로 간주되며, 미국 사회의 핵심적인 가치인 “선택”의 관념을 구현하는 주요한 장이다. 선택의 관념은 창의성에 대한 문화적 정의의 중심적 구성 요소였을 뿐 아니라 나아가서 교수 방법의 실제적 원리를 제공하였다. 이 글에서 다루는 미국의 사례는 창의성의 관념이 해당 사회의 다른 문화적 관념들과 긴밀하게 연결되어 있으며, 창의성 교육 역시 그 문화에서 고유하게 발달하는 교수법으로 이루어진다는 것을 보여준다.

이 글은 북한 보건의료부문의 선전선동에서 사용되는 토착심리학적 담론을 분석함으로써 북한 가족주의 체제의 중요한 차원 하나가 모성성에 있음을 보여주고자 한다. 보건의료부문의 사상적 지침이자 대중동원체제인 정성운동은 가족 관계에서 배태되는 토착심리학적 범주들을 조직적으로 담론화하고, 그럼으로써 공산주의라는 외래 이데올로기를 토착심리의 지평 속으로 끌어들이는 효과를 거둔다. 이때 핵심이 되는 토착심리학적 범주인 육친적 사랑과 정성은 가족 관계 중에서도 모-자녀 관계에 토대한 것인바, 김일성과 김정일의 저작, 로동신문의 기사문, 그리고 보건의료부문 선전영화는 모-자녀 관계의 애착과 정신역동이 정치화되는 것을 일관되게 보여준다. 보건의료부문의 선전선동에서 모성적 주제가 두드러지는 것은 당이 곧 ‘어머니’이며, 보건의료부문 종사자들은 ‘어머니당’의 보살핌을 최전선에서 수행하는 전사들이라는 것과 연결된다. 보건의료부문의 사례는 특히 당의 역할을 고려할 때 북한 국가체제의 가족주의적 성격이 부-자
