About the Lab

Professor Hyun-Jung Lee's research lab specializes in biomedical materials and clinical anesthesiology, focusing on the development of stimuli-responsive polymers for targeted drug delivery and tissue engineering, as well as improving perioperative outcomes in surgical patients. The lab investigates disease-responsive biomaterials—such as ROS-sensitive degradable polymers—and explores innovative anesthetic techniques to manage postoperative pain and reduce complications. Additionally, the lab contributes to maternal-fetal medicine by studying high-risk obstetric conditions, including placenta previa and postpartum hemorrhage, to enhance clinical management strategies.

ROS‐Sensitive Degradable PEG–PCL–PEG Micellar Thermogel
Hyun Jung Lee, Byeongmoon Jeong
SJR Q1Small

Abstract A reactive oxygen species (ROS)‐sensitive degradable polymer would be a promising material in designing a disease‐responsive system or accelerating degradation of polymers with slow hydrolysis kinetics. Here, a thermogelling poly(ethylene glycol)–polycaprolactone–poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG–PCL–PEG or EG 12 –CL 20 –EG 12 ) triblock copolymer with an oxalate group at the middle of the polymer is reported. The polymers form micelles with an average size of 100 nm in water. Thermogelation i

SJR Q1Therapeutics and Clinical Risk ManagementOA

For pediatric patients who require surgery and have a recent history of URI, procedures should be performed after a URI symptom-free period of at least 1-2 weeks. Confirming the absence of abnormalities in preoperative chest images can reduce the incidence of perioperative RAEs.

Intravenous Versus Perineural Dexamethasone for Reducing Rebound Pain After Interscalene Brachial Plexus Block: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Hyun Jung Lee, Jae Hee Woo, Ji Seon Chae, Youn Jin Kim, Sang-Jin Shin
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

Background: Interscalene brachial plexus block (ISB) is a common regional technique to manage acute postoperative pain for arthroscopic rotator cuff tear repair. However, rebound pain may compromise its overall benefit. Our aim was to investigate the primary hypothesis that perineural and intravenous dexamethasone have different effects on rebound pain after resolution of ISB for arthroscopic rotator cuff tear repair. Methods: Patients aged 20 years scheduled for elective arthroscopic rotator cuff

SJR Q2Obstetrics & Gynecology ScienceOA

This is the first study of cases with incomplete placenta previa located on the posterior uterine wall, which were complicated by massive PPH. Our findings might be helpful to guide obstetric management and provide useful information for prediction of massive PPH in pregnancies with incomplete placenta previa located on the posterior uterine wall.

Preoperative Frailty Is an Independent Risk Factor for Postinduction Hypotension in Older Patients Undergoing Noncardiac Surgery: A Retrospective Cohort Study
Hyun Jung Lee, Youn Jin Kim, Jae Hee Woo, Hye‐Won Oh
SJR Q1The Journals of Gerontology Series AOA

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative hypotension is a risk factor for perioperative adverse outcomes and is highly prevalent in older patients. Frailty has been associated with hemodynamic instability but its impact on postinduction hypotension is unclear. Therefore, we assessed the association between frailty and postinduction hypotension in older patients. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated electronic medical records of patients aged ≥65 years who were assessed for preoperative frailty and underwent

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy and complications between cesarean hysterectomy and uterine artery embolization (UAE) in the management of postpartum bleeding.Material and methods: We analyzed the outcomes of 48 patients who underwent cesarean hysterectomy from October 2007 to January 2017, and 333 patients who underwent UAE for postpartum bleeding which was unresponsive to conservative management. We reviewed all medical records retrospectively, an

Transcutaneous Carbon Dioxide Monitoring More Accurately Detects Hypercapnia than End-Tidal Carbon Dioxide Monitoring during Non-Intubated Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery: A Retrospective Cohort Study
Hyun Jung Lee, Jae Hee Woo, Sooyoung Cho, Sunyoung Moon, Sook Whan Sung
SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MedicineOA

Transcutaneous carbon dioxide (PtcCO2) monitoring is known to be effective at estimating the arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2) in patients with sedation-induced respiratory depression. We aimed to investigate the accuracy of PtcCO2 monitoring to measure PaCO2 and its sensitivity to detect hypercapnia (PaCO2 > 60 mmHg) compared to nasal end-tidal carbon dioxide (PetCO2) monitoring during non-intubated video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). This retrospective study inclu

Indicators for Externalizing Behaviors of Adolescents with Asperger Syndrome
이효정, Myles, Brenda Smith, Tien, Kai-Chien

Externalizing behavior has been recognized as a problem area for individuals with Asperger Syndrome for several reasons, such as their poor social cognition and ability to adjust and regulate their responses to the environment. However, due to a lack of empirical studies and information about AS, our understanding of these challenges is still limited In this study, externalizing behavior, including aggression, hyperactivity, and conduct problems, was investigated in an effort to identify predict

Predictive Value of Ultrasound-Measured Quadriceps Depth and Frailty Status for Hypotension in Older Patients Undergoing Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty in the Beach Chair Position under General Anesthesia
Sang-Mee An, Hyun Jung Lee, Jae Hee Woo, Ji Seon Chae, Sangjin Shin
SJR Q2Journal of Personalized MedicineOA

The beach chair position (BCP) is widely used in shoulder surgery; however, it frequently leads to hypotension. Hypotension in BCP is prevalent among older patients who are at risk of secondary complications such as ischemic injuries. Therefore, this prospective study aimed to investigate the association and predictive value of frailty, as assessed by ultrasound-measured quadriceps depth and questionnaire, in patients aged ≥65 years undergoing elective shoulder surgery under general anesthesia.

SJR Q2Journal of Korean Neurosurgical SocietyOA

OBJECTIVE: Isoflurane, a widely used common inhalational anesthetic agent, can induce brain toxicity. The challenge lies in protecting neurologically compromised patients from neurotoxic anesthetics. Choline alfoscerate (L-α-Glycerophosphorylcholine, α-GPC) is recognized for its neuroprotective properties against oxidative stress and inflammation, but its optimal therapeutic window and indications are still under investigation. This study explores the impact of α-GPC on human astrocytes, the mos
