About the Lab
Professor Hyun Jung Park's research lab focuses on molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Parkinson’s disease, with an emphasis on neuroprotection, neuroinflammation, and stem cell therapy. The lab investigates genetic causes of sensorineural hearing loss, especially mutations in the SLC26A4 gene associated with enlarged vestibular aqueduct, and explores the role of transcription factors like FoxM1b in cancer progression and metastasis. Key research directions include the anti-inflammatory effects of nicotine, the therapeutic potential of mesenchymal stem cells, and the cell cycle regulation of oncoproteins in hepatocellular carcinoma.

15Epidemiological studies have reported that smoking is associated with a lower incidence of Parkinson's disease (PD), leading to theories that smoking in general and nicotine in particular might be neuroprotective. Recent studies suggested cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway-regulating microglial activation through alpha7 nicotinic receptors. In the present study, we used lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced in vitro and in vivo inflammation models to investigate whether nicotine has a protective e
These findings suggest that higher levels of warmth, characteristics of both parenting styles, may be a critical factor in the development of health-related behaviors.
INTRODUCTION: The blood-brain barrier (BBB) protects the brain against potentially neurotoxic molecules in the circulation, and loss of its integrity may contribute to disease progression in neurodegenerative conditions. Recently, the active role of reactive astrocytes in BBB disruption has become evident in the inflamed brain. In the present study, we investigated whether mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) treatment might modulate reactive astrocytes and thus stabilize BBB integrity through vascular e
It has been known that activation of the central innate immune system or exposure to stress can disrupt balance of anti-/proinflammatory cytokines. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in the modulation of depressive-like behaviors, the hormonal and neurotransmitter systems in rats. We investigated whether centrally administered IL-1β is associated with activation of CNS inflammatory pathways and behavioral changes and whether treatment
Growing evidence has demonstrated that neurogenesis in the subventricular zone (SVZ) is significantly decreased in Parkinson's disease (PD). Modulation of endogenous neurogenesis would have a significant impact on future therapeutic strategies for neurodegenerative diseases. In the present study, we investigated the augmentative effects of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) on neurogenesis in a PD model. Neurogenesis was assessed in vitro with 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP(+)) treatment usi
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to validate the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) among middle-aged Korean women with type 2 diabetes. Methods: Data were collected from 123 middle-aged Korean women with diabetes. Construct and concurrent validity were examined using factor analysis. Results: Factor analysis extracted three factors: spouse, family, and friends. The MSPSS had relatively good concurrent validity (r = .66, p < .0001), construct validity, and strong re
Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is an adult-onset sporadic neurodegenerative disorder of unknown etiology featuring parkinsonism, ataxia, and autonomic failure in any combination. Because disease progression in MSA is rapid and no drug treatment consistently benefits MSA patients in the long term, neuroprotective or regenerative strategies may be invaluable in the management of MSA patients. In this study, we investigated whether human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) had a protective effect on MSA
Nonylphenol (NP) is an endocrine-disruptor chemical that negatively affects reproductive health. Testes exposure to NP results in testicular structure disruption and a reduction in testicular size and testosterone levels. However, the effects of NP on spermatogonia in testes have not been fully elucidated. In this study, the molecular mechanisms of NP in GC-1 spermatogonia (spg) cells were investigated. We found that cell viability significantly decreased and apoptosis increased in a dose-depend
