About the Lab
Professor Hyun Kyung Lee's research lab focuses on the intersection of cultural heritage, identity formation, and social memory in post-colonial East Asian contexts, particularly examining how colonial legacies are reinterpreted and repurposed in urban regeneration and city branding. The lab also investigates psychological and educational processes, including multicultural competence in counseling, adolescent emotional development, and the role of goal orientation and creativity in academic achievement. Additionally, it explores neurocognitive mechanisms underlying social-emotional functioning in autistic children, especially in relation to emotional face processing and inhibition control. The lab integrates qualitative, quantitative, and neurocognitive methodologies to examine how historical narratives, emotional experiences, and cognitive processes shape individual and collective identities in contemporary society.

15As racial and ethnic diversity increase in the U.S., genetic counselor multicultural competence is growing in importance. In mental health counseling, supervisor multicultural competence has been shown to promote supervisees' multicultural competence. Moreover, developmentally-advanced supervisors tend to be more effective. This study was designed to investigate relationships among genetic counselor supervisors' perceived multicultural counseling competence and development as supervisors, and th
Abstract In South Korea, romanticization of the era of Japanese colonial rule (1910–1945) has long been taboo: the period is widely regarded as one of the most painful and shameful parts of South Korean history. However, during the past decade unexpected cracks have appeared in established national narratives on the colonial period. This paper explores the dissonance between long-standing national narratives and the commodification of local heritage sites for tourism, by examining the heritagiza
Amid increasing interest in city branding in East Asia, the municipalities of Gunsan (South Korea) and Chiayi (Taiwan) chose colonial heritage-making as their city branding strategies to recreate their cities’ identities and regenerate their economies. Both cities were mostly built by Japanese imperial authorities and thrived in the 1920s and 1930s but deteriorated in the post-colonial period. Seeking to overcome long economic recessions, these two small cities endeavoured to rebrand in the twen
Impaired socioemotional functioning characterizes autistic children, but does weak inhibition control underlie their socioemotional difficulty? This study addressed this question by examining whether and, if so, how inhibition control is affected by face realism and emotional valence in school-age autistic and neurotypical children. Fifty-two autistic and 52 age-matched neurotypical controls aged 10-12 years completed real and cartoon emotional face Go/Nogo tasks while event-related potentials (
Built in 1925 during the Japanese colonial period, Dongdaemun Stadium was the first modern sports stadium in Seoul, the capital of Korea. During the Japanese colonial occupation and after liberation, especially in the 1960s–80s, Korean sports fans experienced numerous significant victories at Dongdaemun. This article investigates how Dongdaemun Stadium, part of the Japanese colonial legacy, became the Dongdaemun Design Plaza and Park (DDP), a landmark of the new Seoul and a social, cultural, and
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore whether and how the individual perceptions on income inequality and the inequality of opportunities affect two different modes of political participation, institutional and non-institutional, in South Korea. This chapter investigates colonial prisons located in formerly Japanese-occupied Asian cities, considering how they are remembered as heritage in order to understand how the colonial past remains influential in the present. It seeks to understand how the three prison museum sites have formed particularly Asian perspectives on dealing with colonial heritage sites and whether this Asian phenomenon helps us to understand Asia either as one unit or several sub-units, in line with the overarching que
