About the Lab
Professor Hyun Suk Kim's research lab specializes in media and communication studies with a focus on health communication, political discourse, and digital media engagement. The lab investigates how narrative structures, emotional appeal, and message characteristics influence audience behavior, including selective exposure, sharing, and behavioral intentions in health and political contexts. Using mixed-methods approaches—combining experimental designs, content analysis, and large-scale behavioral data—the lab explores the psychological and societal impacts of media content in digital environments.

Selected Papers
15health news articles, and associated article content and context data. News articles with high informational utility and positive sentiment invited more frequent selections and retransmissions. Articles were also more frequently selected when they presented controversial, emotionally evocative, and familiar content. Informational utility and novelty had stronger positive associations with e-mail-specific virality, while emotional evocativeness, content familiarity, and exemplification played a l
This study investigated psychological mechanisms underlying the effect of narrative health communication on behavioral intention. Specifically, the study examined how exemplification in news about successful smoking cessation affects recipients' narrative engagement, thereby changing their intention to quit smoking. Nationally representative samples of U.S. adult smokers participated in 2 experiments. The results from the 2 experiments consistently showed that smokers reading a news article with
This study examined how content characteristics of antitobacco messages affect smokers' selective exposure to and social sharing of those messages. Results from an experiment revealed that content features predicting smokers' selection of antismoking messages are different from those predicting whether those messages are shared. Antismoking messages smokers tend to select are characterized by strong arguments (odds ratio = 2.02, P = .02) and positive sentiments (odds ratio = 3.08, P = .03). Once
Effects of violent video games on aggression remain contentious despite decades of empirical investigations. Using eight-wave panel data collected from 662 South Korean adolescents (grades 4, 7, and 10) for a 4-year period (number of observations = 5,296), the current research critically tested competing hypotheses concerning the relations between violent video games and aggression. In so doing, we directly compared the results from dynamic fixed-effects (FE) regression with those from conventio
This study examined (a) what message variations characterize news articles that fact-check (mis)information (N = 914) and (b) how those message features shape audience engagement with the articles. The study content-analyzed fact-checking coverage from major news outlets in South Korea using both manual and computerized coding, focusing on three categories of message characteristics: source transparency, contextual information, and vividness. The content-analysis data were examined in relation t
This study investigated how content and context features of headlines drive selective exposure when choosing between headlines of a monthly e-mail health newsletter in a naturalistic setting over a period of nine months. Study participants received a monthly e-mail newsletter and could freely open it and click any headline to read the accompanying article. In each e-mail newsletter, nine headlines competed with each other for selection. Textual and visual information of the headlines was content

An assembly model consists of component models and their relations. Conventional CAD systems support 3 dimensional visualization of component models in flat 2D screen. Here, assembly simulation of the assembly model is proposed where the components are displayed and manipulated in 3D environment in real time using the virtual reality interface and the designer can visualize and manipulate the computer based assembly model naturally like a physical mock up. A real time manipulation of component m
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to identify factors affecting the innovative behavior of general hospital professional staff. Methods: In the final analysis, the study focuses on the 442 structured questionnaires received from the professional staff (doctors, nurses, medical technicians, and administrative staff) of H Hospital, a public medical foundation. Data were collected from August 1 to 31, 2014. The SPSS/WIN 19.0 program was used for data analysis which included t-test, ANOVA, Schef
Abstract This study examined how users’ self-views (i.e., identity coherence, identity confusion, self-esteem) and their self-presentation through avatars (i.e., the number of avatars used, self-avatar dissimilarity, the frequency of and the expenditure on avatar customization) in the metaverse mutually influence each other, based on a three-wave panel survey of Zepeto users in South Korea (N = 640). Dynamic fixed-effects models yielded no significant effects of self-views on avatar-based self-p
This study examined the psychological mechanisms underlying the persuasive effects of moral reframing—matching message content to recipients’ core moral foundations—by focusing on processing fluency, message processing depth, and self-affirmation as mediators. An online experiment conducted in South Korea demonstrated that, across two policy issues, moral reframing promoted processing fluency and self-affirmation, thereby enhancing the perceived persuasiveness of policy advocacy messages. Furthe
What makes health news articles attractable and viral? Why do some articles diffuse widely by prompting audience selections (attractability) and subsequent social retransmissions (virality), while others do not? Identifying what drives social epidemics of health news coverage is crucial to our understanding of its impact on the public, especially in the emerging media environment where news consumption has become increasingly selective and social. This dissertation examines how message features
