About the Lab
Professor Hyun Young Kim's research lab focuses on advancing biomedical engineering and regenerative medicine through innovative materials and clinical applications. Key research directions include the development of bioresorbable electronic surgical meshes for real-time postoperative monitoring and targeted drug delivery, the investigation of environmental pollutants—particularly fine dust—on neurological health and systemic inflammation, and the application of advanced imaging and minimally invasive techniques in periodontal regeneration and congenital disease prognosis. The lab integrates materials science, clinical medicine, and biomedical engineering to address critical challenges in surgical outcomes, neurodegenerative disease mechanisms, and early disease detection.

15Background: It is widely known that the harmful effects of fine dust can cause various diseases. Research on the correlation between fine dust and health has been mainly focused on lung and cardiovascular diseases. By contrast, the effects of air pollution on the central nervous system (CNS) are not broadly recognized. Findings: Air pollution can cause diverse neurological disorders as the result of inflammation of the nervous system, oxidative stress, activation of microglial cells, protein con
With the advances in medicine, the incidence of Fontan physiology-related complications is likely to increase, and the incidence of HCC will also increase accordingly. As early diagnosis of HCC results in better patient outcomes, a surveillance guideline for HCC after the FP should be developed.
BACKGROUND: Evaluation of periodontal regeneration is usually made by clinical measurements despite their limitations in determining the precise nature of the healing response. In the present study, the possibility of using bone probing measurements under local anesthesia to determine bone level changes without a re-entry procedure was investigated. METHODS: Thirty-eight (38) first molars in 28 patients with chronic periodontitis who were scheduled to have periodontal surgery were included in th

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to determine perinatal risk factors for 30-day mortality of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) patients and develop a prognostic index to predict 30-day mortality of CDH patients. Identifying risk factors that can prognosticate outcome is critical to obtain the best management practices for patients. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed for patients who were diagnosed with CDH from November 2000 to August 2016. A total of 10 prenatal risk factors and 14 po
Current research in the area of surgical mesh implants is somewhat limited to traditional designs and synthesis of various mesh materials, whereas meshes with multiple functions may be an effective approach to address long-standing challenges including postoperative complications. Herein, a bioresorbable electronic surgical mesh is presented that offers high mechanical strength over extended timeframes, wireless post-operative pressure monitoring, and on-demand drug delivery for the restoration
BACKGROUND: Recent interest in naturally based products has increased. Various herbal extracts are known to have a variety of medicinal properties. Among the various natural medicines, safflower seeds have beneficial effects on various bone diseases such as bone fracture, osteoporosis, and osteodysplasia. In addition, they are known to have anti-inflammatory effects. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of a safflower seed extract (SSE) on the regeneration of periodontal tissue
OBJECTIVE: A lipoblastoma is pathologically benign but often recurs. Due to its rarity, studies are scarce. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical characteristics of lipoblastoma occurring in children and to detect any correlations with the expression of Ki-67. PARTICIPANTS: From 1998 to 2010, 33 patients were diagnosed with lipoblastoma at Seoul National University Children's Hospital. METHODS: Ki-67 immunohistochemistry staining of the tumor tissue was performed. RESULTS: A
