About the Lab
Professor Hyung-woong Park's research lab focuses on environmental health and translational medicine, with a strong emphasis on the impact of environmental pollutants—particularly endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) such as phthalates, bisphenol A, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons—on metabolic and renal diseases. The lab investigates the epidemiological links between urinary biomarkers of chemical exposure and conditions like obesity, diabetes mellitus, and chronic kidney disease, using large-scale national health survey data. They also explore alternative surgical techniques in spinal surgery, such as cage-based anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, and evaluate point-of-care diagnostic technologies for clinical applications.

15Along with positive SARS-CoV-2 RNA in nasopharyngeal swabs, viral RNA was detectable at high concentration for >3 weeks in fecal samples from 12 mildly symptomatic and asymptomatic children with COVID-19 in Seoul, South Korea. Saliva also tested positive during the early phase of infection. If proven infectious, feces and saliva could serve as transmission sources.

Phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA) have been suspected as risk factors for obesity and diabetes mellitus (DM) among humans. However, associations between phthalates and environmental phenols are often inconsistent across different populations. In this study, we recruited the adult population (n = 3782) of the Korean National Environmental Health Survey (KoNEHS) 2015-2017 (Cycle 3) and assessed the associations between urinary biomarkers of phthalate, BPA, and paraben exposure with obesity and DM.
ACDF using the Solis cage packed with Grafton demonstrated good clinical and radiologic outcomes. The fusion rate was comparable with the published results of the traditional ACDF using tricortical iliac crest grafts. Therefore, the results of this study suggest that the ongoing use of the PEEK cage packed with DBM and autologous bone chips in ACDF is a safe and effective alternative to the gold standard of autologous iliac bone grafts.
