About the Lab

Professor Hyungjin Shin's research lab specializes in hydrological and ecological modeling, with a focus on watershed management, non-point source pollution, and the impacts of land use on water quality. The lab integrates remote sensing, field monitoring, and process-based models such as RHESSys to assess water cycle dynamics, carbon and nutrient cycling, and ecosystem productivity in forested and agricultural watersheds. Additional research extends to environmental health, including rare pediatric tumors and clinical applications in sepsis management, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach to environmental and health systems. The lab emphasizes data-driven modeling and validation using in-situ measurements and satellite observations.

SJR Q1WaterOA

Three watersheds in Korea (Dochoncheon, Gongjicheon, Seolseongcheon) with different land cover characteristics were selected for non-point source pollution monitoring. Event mean concentration (EMC) was calculated, and runoff characteristics were compared through first-flushing and statistical analyses. The mean of the water quality parameters was the highest in Seolseongcheon during dry days among the three watersheds. EMCs of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total nitrogen (TN) were higher

SJR Q2Child s Nervous SystemOA

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare pigmented tumor generally occurring in the head and neck region in children 12 months of age or younger. Approximately 380 instances of this tumor are reported in the medical literature. We presented a case of MNTI that occurred in the left temporal bone of a 2-month old female infant. And, the clinical assessment, histologic diagnosis, and management is reviewed.

The Efficacy of Early Goal-directed Therapy in Septic Shock Patients in the Emergency Department: Severe Sepsis Campaign
Hyung Jin Shin, Kang Hyun Lee, Sung Oh Hwang, Hyun Kim, Tae Yong Shin, Sang Chul Kim
The Korean Journal of Critical Care Medicine

BACKGROUNDEarly goal-directed therapy (EGDT) has been used for patients with severe sepsis and septic shock in the emergency department (ED). In 2003, international management guidelines for severe sepsis and septic shock were developed under the auspices of the Surviving Sepsis Campaign (SSC); however, EGDT based on the SSC was not fully evaluated in the ED. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of EGDT based on the SSC in the ED in Korea.METHODSWe randomly assigned patients wh

Extraction of Snowmelt Parameters using NOAA AVHRR and GIS Technique for 7 Major Dam Watersheds in South Korea
Hyung Jin Shin, Seong Joon Kim
Journal of the Korean Society of Civil Engineers

Accurate monitoring of snow cover is a key component for studying climate and global as well as for daily weather forecasting and snowmelt runoff modelling. The few observed data related to snowmelt was the major cause of difficulty in extracting snowmelt factors such as snow cover area, snow depth and depletion curve. Remote sensing technology is very effective to observe a wide area. Although many researchers have used remote sensing for snow observation, there were a few discussions on the ch

Design, manufacture and field test of a surface water storage tank providing irrigation water to upland crops
Hyung Jin Shin, Young‐Joon Kim, Jae‐Young Lee, Hwang-Hee Kim, Sung Mun Jo, Sang Soo Sun, Seon-Ah Hwang, Seung-Kee Lee, Chan Gi Park
Korean Journal of Agricultural ScienceOA

For most upland crops in Korea, underground water is used to ensure an adequate water supply. Thus, surface water storage tanks are needed to supply surface water from reservoirs or streams. This study discusses the design, manufacture and monitoring of a water storage tank capable of reliably supplying water to crops and preventing the inflow of floating debris. The study was conducted in an apple orchard in Yesan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do in Korea. Based on the water requirements of the crops and
