About the Lab
Professor Inho Jo's research lab specializes in the identification, characterization, and bioactivity evaluation of bioactive metabolites in medicinal and functional plants, with a focus on Korean and Vietnamese ginseng species. The lab employs advanced analytical techniques such as LC-MS and LC-MS/MS to conduct global metabolite profiling and to develop in-house compound libraries for reliable metabolite identification. Research also extends to the aging stability of traditional materials like Hanji paper when used in oriental art, assessing the durability of various pigments and inks under accelerated aging conditions. The lab integrates analytical chemistry with natural product research to explore the health-promoting potential of functional plants and to support evidence-based applications in medicine and cultural heritage.

5Plants have been utilized as crucial raw materials for medicine development worldwide and consumed in the form of food or medicine due to their medicinal properties. Since medicinal efficacy of plants is derived from numerous bioactive metabolites synthesized within them, identifying metabolites present in specific plants is crucial. In this study, we conducted global metabolite profiling of medicinal and functional plants used in Korea, employing liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS).
Functional plants cultivated in Korea are recognized as rich sources of bioactive metabolites with potential health benefits. In this study, seventeen metabolites were quantified from thirty different Korean functional plant species using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). As these seventeen compounds exhibit diverse bioactivities, they can serve as indicators to explore and suggest the potential functional properties of the plants.
Hanji, a traditional Korean paper, has been served as the primary base material for oriental paintings. In recent years, modern colored paints, along with traditional ink, have also been applied in oriental painting, but research on their aging stability remains limited. This study evaluates the aging stability of two types of Hanji commonly used in art, treated with ink, acrylic paint, tube paint, and powdered pigment. Vietnamese ginseng (Panax vietnamensis) is a species of ginseng native to Vietnam and is known to be one of the species rich in ginseng saponins.
