About the Lab

Professor Ivana Karanovic's research lab specializes in the systematics, taxonomy, and evolutionary biology of freshwater and subterranean ostracodes, with a particular focus on the diverse and ancient Candoninae subfamily. The lab investigates the biodiversity, endemism, and biogeography of these microscopic crustaceans in isolated and relictual environments such as the Pilbara region of Western Australia and other tectonically stable, ancient landscapes. Using integrative approaches combining morphological analysis, phylogenetic systematics, and molecular techniques, the lab contributes to understanding evolutionary stasis, speciation in subterranean ecosystems, and the conservation significance of endemic faunas. Their work highlights the role of deep-time geological processes in shaping modern biodiversity patterns.

Candoninae (Ostracoda) from the Pilbara Region in Western Australia

This monograph describes the Candoninae fauna of the Pilbara region, containing 84 species and 12 genera, of which 83 species and 11 genera are endemic. The Pilbara region has emerged since the Precambrian and is therefore the most ancient landscape on Earth. The underground life, discovered only recently in the calcrete systems, speaks clearly about the antiquity of the region.
