About the Lab
Professor Jae-seon Kim's research lab specializes in gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary diseases, with a focus on pancreatic and biliary tract cancers, chronic pancreatitis, and hepatobiliary malignancies. The lab investigates the clinical epidemiology, etiology, and treatment outcomes of these conditions, particularly in the Korean population, with an emphasis on chemotherapy response, parasitic infections (e.g., clonorchiasis), and complications such as Fanconi’s syndrome in patients on long-term antiviral therapy. The research integrates clinical endoscopy, surgical outcomes, and long-term follow-up data to improve diagnosis and management strategies.

15Adenocarcinomas of the pancreas and biliary tract are highly malignant neoplasms, which are found in the advanced stage. Chemotherapy commonly plays a palliative role in the treatment of pancreatic and biliary tract cancers. 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is the most widely studied single agent; the response rate of 5-FU is only 20%. Recently, some reports presented interesting results, in which 5-FU, modulated with levofolinic acid (leucovorin), was active in patients with colorectal cancer. In relation
BACKGROUND/AIMS: No reliable nationwide clinical data about chronic pancreatitis (CP) was available in Korea. The etiology and clinical features of CP were investigated using a multicenter nationwide study. METHODS: 814 cases of CP were enrolled retrospectively over the past 4 years at 13 hospitals. The following data were obtained from all patients: etiology, symptoms, complications, and surgery. RESULT: Alcohol (64.3%) was the major cause of CP and idiopathic CP (20.8%) was the second most com
Infection rate of clonorchiasis was still high in patients with gastrointestinal diseases in Korea, and has not decreased very much during the last two decades. Cholangiocarcinoma was related to clonorchiasis, which suggested an etiological role for the parasite.
BACKGROUND: Hepatolithiasis is a well-known risk factor of cholangiocarcinoma. Despite advances in diagnostic modalities, diagnosing cholangiocarcinoma in patients with hepatolithiasis still challenging and there are not enough reports on the incidence of cholangiocarcinoma in patient with hepatolithiasis after treatment. We aimed to evaluate the incidence and clinical characteristics of cholangiocarcinoma in patients with hepatolithiasis who underwent liver resection or non-resection. METHODS:
Adefovir dipivoxil (ADV) is commonly used as an antiviral agent in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B or human immunodeficiency virus infection. Nephrotoxicity has been shown to occur at daily dosages of 60-120mg. Fanconi’s syndrome is a generalized dysfunction of the renal proximal tubular cells, which is usually accompanied by complications. Here we report a case of Fanconi’s syndrome in a chronic hepatitis B patient who had been treated with a prolonged regimen of ADV at 10 mg/day. A 47-yea
BACKGROUND: It has been reported that there are four zones of distinct venous patterns around the gastroesophageal junction (GEJ); i.e. truncal, perforating, palisade (PZ) and gastric zones. Using the distal end of PZ as a marker for GEJ, this study was done to assess the length and patterns of PZ in Koreans, and to assess the prevalence of endoscopic Barrett's esophagus (E-BE) and hiatal hernia (E-HH). METHODS: 847 consecutive patients undergoing diagnostic endoscopy were included. During endos
Background and Aims: Extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) without liver-fluke is increasing. Multifactorial carcinogenesis makes it hard to find biomarkers related to CCA. Although there are a few studies of bile proteomics, these showed different protein profiles because of having heterogeneous groups of patients and different sampling methods. Our aim was to identify the specific bile proteins of extrahepatic CCA patients. Methods: We collected bile from 23 patients undergoing e
There was no difference in the incidence of cholangiocarcinoma according to previous liver resections. Patients with hepatolithiasis should be carefully followed up for detection of cholangiocarcinoma even after a previous liver resection.
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Hepatolithiasis is a common disease in East Asia and presents as a histological feature of proliferative glands containing mucin. 5-10% of hepatolithiasis is known to be associated with cholangiocarcinoma. Recent studies reported that epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) could be activated through heparin binding- EGF cleavage by metalloproteinases. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) which digest the extracellular matrix are required for cancer cell invasion and the expression
Endoscopic papillectomy is a safe and effective treatment for ampullary adenomas. Careful selection and follow-up of patients is mandatory, particularly in cases with positive/uncertain margin and piecemeal resection.
