About the Lab
Professor Jae Seung Kang's research lab focuses on immunology and cancer biology, with a particular emphasis on the role of metabolic enzymes and inflammatory mediators in autoimmune diseases and tumor immune evasion. The lab investigates molecular mechanisms underlying immune cell activation, including the cell-surface expression of α-enolase in rheumatoid arthritis and the immunomodulatory effects of natural compounds like red ginseng and vitamin C. Additionally, the lab explores the regulation of cancer metastasis through cytokines such as IL-18 and the impact of micronutrients like vitamin C on tumor cell iron metabolism and apoptosis. Their work bridges basic immunology, translational medicine, and therapeutic development.

15α-Enolase (ENO1) is a multifunctional glycolytic enzyme expressed abundantly in the cytosol. It has been implicated in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Serum Abs against ENO1 were reported in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Cell-surface expression of ENO1 has been found to be increased rapidly in response to inflammatory stimuli, but its expression and function has not been reported in RA. In this study, we show that cell-surface expression of ENO1 is increased on monocytes and macrophages isola
OBJECTIVES: Because red ginseng and vitamin C have immunomodulatory function and anti-viral effect, we investigated whether red ginseng and vitamin C synergistically regulate immune cell function and suppress viral infection. METHODS: Red ginseng and vitamin C were treated to human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) or sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV)-infected BCBL-1, and administrated to Gulo(-/-) mice, which are incapable of synthesizing vitamin C, with or without influenza A viru
BACKGROUND AND AIM: Little is known about the incidence of and risk factors for glucose intolerance after distal pancreatectomy. This study investigated the clinicopathologic factors associated with the development of glucose intolerance or overt diabetes mellitus (DM) after distal pancreatectomy, and the correlation between resected pancreas volume and endocrine function impairment. METHODS: After excluding patients with preoperative DM, 101 patients who underwent distal pancreatectomy with a m
Cancer cells metastasize to the other site after escaping from the immune system and CD70, CD44 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) play important roles in this process. It is recently reported that interleukin (IL)-18 is closely related with the pathogenesis of skin tumor. Therefore, we investigated the role of endogenous IL-18 from stomach cancer on the immune escape mechanism and metastasis via the regulation of CD70, CD44 and VEGF expression. IL-18 and IL-18R expressions were not o
Porous silicon has been utilized within a wide spectrum of industries, as well as being used in basic research for engineering and biomedical fields. Recently, surface modification methods have been constantly coming under the spotlight, mostly in regard to maximizing its purpose of use. Within this review, we will introduce porous silicon, the experimentation preparatory methods, the properties of the surface of porous silicon, and both more conventional as well as newly developed surface modif
Sodium ascorbate (vitamin C) has a reputation for inconsistent effects upon malignant tumor cells, which vary from growth stimulation to apoptosis induction. Melanoma cells were found to be more susceptible to vitamin C toxicity than any other tumor cells. The present study has shown that sodium ascorbate decreases cellular iron uptake by melanoma cells in a dose- and time-dependent fashion, indicating that intracellular iron levels may be a critical factor in sodium ascorbate-induced apoptosis.
The action of β-secretase (BACE1) is strongly correlated with the onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Aminochalcone derivatives were examined for their ability to inhibit BACE1. Parent aminochalcones showed two digit micromolar IC(50)s against BACE1. Potency was enhanced 10-fold or more by introducing benzenesulfonyl derivatives to the amino group: 1 (IC(50) = 48.2 μM) versus 4a (IC(50) = 1.44 μM) and 2 (IC(50) = 17.7 μM) versus 5a (IC(50) = 0.21 μM). The activity was significantly influenced by
Two of the most critical factors for the survival of glioblastoma (GBM) patients are precision diagnosis and the tracking of treatment progress. At the moment, various sophisticated and specific diagnostic procedures are being used, but there are relatively few simple diagnosis methods. This work introduces a sensing probe based on a turn-on type fluorescence response that can measure the cysteine (Cys) level, which is recognized as a new biomarker of GBM, in human-derived cells and within on-si
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the associated factors and prognosis according to pathology and margin after surgical resection of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN). BACKGROUND: There is limited information on recurrence patterns according to pathology and margin in IPMN. METHODS: Total 577 patients who underwent operation for IPMN at a tertiary center were included. Factors associated with recurrence, survival, and recurrence outcomes according to pathology and margin were analyze
AIM: l-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) insufficiency is considered one of the major risk factors for the development of liver disease. However, its specific effects and related mechanisms in vivo are largely unknown. The objective of this study was to investigate the in vivo protective role of vitamin C and its related mechanisms in liver injury with Gulo(-/-) mice that cannot synthesize vitamin C like humans due to the lack of l-gulonolactone-γ-oxidase (Gulo), an essential enzyme for vitamin C synthe
It is known that vitamin C induces apoptosis in several kinds of tumor cells, but its effect on the regulation of the angiogenic process of tumors is not completely studied. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is the most well-known angiogenic factor, and it has a potent function as a stimulator of endothelial survival, migration, as well as vascular permeability. Therefore, we have investigated whether vitamin C can regulate the angiogenic process through the modulation of VEGF production
Interleukin (IL)-22 is a potent mediator of inflammatory responses. The IL-22 receptor consists of the IL-22Rα and IL-10Rβ subunits. Previous studies have shown that IL-22Rα expression is restricted to non-hematopoietic cells in the skin, pancreas, intestine, liver, lung, and kidney. Although IL-22 is involved in the development of inflammatory responses, there have been no reports of its role in brain inflammation. Here, we used RT-PCR, Western blotting, flow cytometry, immunohistochemical, and
BACKGROUND: Alloferon, an immunomodulatory peptide, has antiviral capability against herpesvirus. In this research, we aimed to investigate the effect of alloferon on the regulation of the life cycle of Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), and its mechanisms. We also assessed the antiviral activity of alloferon on natural killer (NK) cells as an early antiviral immune responder. METHODS: We first examined the change in cell proliferation and the expression of the viral genes in a KSHV
