About the Lab

Professor Jae-Young Lim's research lab focuses on rehabilitation medicine and geriatric health, with a strong emphasis on improving physical function and quality of life in older adults and patients with chronic conditions such as knee osteoarthritis, stroke, and post-breast cancer complications. The lab investigates non-pharmacological interventions—including aquatic and land-based exercise programs, neuromuscular treatments like botulinum toxin and corticosteroid injections, and innovative diagnostic technologies using SERS and PCA for viral infections. A key focus is on integrating robotics and advanced diagnostics into clinical care, particularly in aging and long-term care settings.

Effectiveness of Aquatic Exercise for Obese Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Jae‐Young Lim, Esther Tchai, Soong‐Nang Jang
SJR Q1PM&R

OBJECTIVE: To design an aquatic exercise (AQE) and land-based exercise (LBE) program to enhance knee function and reduce body fat in patients with obesity and knee osteoarthritis and to investigate the effectiveness of AQE and LBE on body fat, functional fitness, and functional status. SETTING: Outpatient clinic at a Seoul National University Bundang Hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Obese patients with knee osteoarthritis were recruited from patients who visited the rehabilitation, orthopedic surgery, an

Longitudinal change of treatment‐related upper limb dysfunction and its impact on late dysfunction in breast cancer survivors: A prospective cohort study
Eun Joo Yang, Won‐Beom Park, Kwan Sik Seo, Sung‐Won Kim, Chan Yeong Heo, Jae‐Young Lim
SJR Q1Journal of Surgical OncologyOA

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence of upper limb dysfunction (ULD) and subtypes after breast cancer surgery and to identify factors associated with late ULD. METHODS: Among 191 enrolled patients, 191 were evaluated at 3 months, 187 at 6 months, and 183 at 12 months after surgery. Pain, shoulder range of motion, muscle strength, and arm circumference were assessed. Based on symptoms and physical examinations, the types of ULD common after breast cancer treatment were diagnos

Intramuscular Botulinum Toxin-A Reduces Hemiplegic Shoulder Pain
Jae‐Young Lim, Jae-Hyeon Koh, Nam‐Jong Paik
SJR Q1StrokeOA

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Shoulder pain is frequent after stroke and interferes with the rehabilitative process and outcome. However, treatments used for hemiplegic shoulder pain are limited and largely ineffective. This prospective, randomized, double-blind controlled study was conducted to compare the efficacies of botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) and triamcinolone acetonide (TA) on hemiplegic shoulder pain and their effects on arm function in patients with stroke. METHODS: Twenty-nine hemiplegic

Nurses’ needs for care robots in integrated nursing care services
Jai‐Yon Lee, Young Ae Song, Ji Young Jung, Hyun Jeong Kim, Bo Ram Kim, Hyun‐Kyung Do, Jae‐Young Lim
SJR Q1Journal of Advanced Nursing

AIMS: To determine the need for care robots among nurses and to suggest how robotic care should be prioritized in integrated nursing care services. BACKGROUND: Korea is expected to be a super-aged society by 2030. To solve care issues with elderly inpatient caused by informal caregivers, the government introduced "integrated nursing care services"; these are comprehensive care systems staffed by professionally trained nurses. To assist them, a care robot development project has been launched. DE

SJR Q1Age and AgeingOA

BACKGROUND: the relationship between muscle mass and physical performance has not been consistent among studies. OBJECTIVE: to clarify the relationship between muscle mass and physical performance in older adults with weak muscle strength. DESIGN: cross-sectional analysis using the baseline data of 542 older men and women from the Korean Longitudinal Study on Health and Aging. METHODS: dual X-ray absorptiometry, isokinetic dynamometer and the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) were perfor

Identification of Newly Emerging Influenza Viruses by Detecting the Virally Infected Cells Based on Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy and Principal Component Analysis
Jae‐Young Lim, Jung-soo Nam, Hyunku Shin, Jaena Park, Hye-in Song, Min-Sung Kang, Kwang‐il Lim, Yeonho Choi
SJR Q1Analytical Chemistry

Rapid diagnosis and quarantine of influenza virus mutant-infected people is critical to contain the fatal viral infection spread because effective antiviral drugs are normally not available. Conventional methods, however, cannot be used for the diagnosis because these methods need predefined labels, likely also unavailable for just emerging viruses. Here, we propose label-free identification of cells infected with different influenza viruses based on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) an

http://kmbase.medric.or.kr/Main.aspx?d=KMBASE&m=VIEW&i=0828520100140010008

Journal of the Korean Geriatrics Society

Methods: The study participants were community-dwelling elderly people aged 65 years or old as a population based sample of one large city. A total of 828 people 65 years or older participated in this study. They were interviewed over the telephone by a trained interviewer using a structured questionnaire to obtain a fall history and details of their most recent fall including date, time, place, circumstances, and associated injury. As for risk factors for falls, we asked about living arran- gem
