About the Lab
Professor Jae Young Shin's research lab focuses on translational biomedical research with an emphasis on aging, frailty, and chronic disease management. The lab investigates the immunomodulatory effects of natural compounds—such as ginseng polysaccharides—on innate immunity and cancer surveillance, while also exploring novel dermatological therapies for conditions like vitiligo. Additionally, the lab examines lifestyle and physiological factors, including smoking, sleep disorders (e.g., OSA), and physical fitness, in relation to age-related health outcomes. Recent work also extends into the evaluation of artificial intelligence applications in healthcare, particularly large language models in medical contexts.

15The root of Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer is one of the most popular natural tonics in oriental countries. In this study, we have isolated polysaccharide fraction of Panax ginseng (ginsan) and examined its effect on the function of murine peritoneal macrophages. When macrophages were treated with ginsan, cytotoxic activity against B16 melanoma cells was significantly induced. In addition, the levels of cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta), IL-6 a
BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is a common acquired depigmentation disorder caused by the loss of melanocytes. Despite the numerous treatment modalities available for vitiligo, responses to treatment are still unsatisfactory. For this reason, new treatment modalities and approaches are needed. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of fractional carbon dioxide (CO(2) ) laser therapy followed by systemic narrowband ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) phototherapy on nonsegmental vitiligo (NSV) as a prospective and rand
Importance: A frailty index has been proposed as a measure of aging among older individuals. However, few studies have examined whether a frailty index measured at the same chronologic age at younger ages could forecast the development of new age-related conditions. Objective: To examine the association of the frailty index at 66 years of age with incident age-related diseases, disability, and death over 10 years. Design, Setting, and Participants: This retrospective nationwide cohort study used
The results of the current study strengthen the previous findings in regards to hand grip strength and health. Furthermore, the results of our study shines light on the necessity of considering individual differences in BMI, when using a physical measure as a study variable.
BACKGROUND: Owing to the rapid growth in the popularity of Large Language Models (LLMs), various performance evaluation studies have been conducted to confirm their applicability in the medical field. However, there is still no clear framework for evaluating LLMs. OBJECTIVE: This study reviews studies on LLM evaluations in the medical field and analyzes the research methods used in these studies. It aims to provide a reference for future researchers designing LLM studies. METHODS & MATERIALS: We
Smoking is a risk factor for respiratory diseases, and it worsens sleep quality due to nicotine stimulation and sudden nicotine withdrawal during sleep. This can increase the severity of OSA through alterations upper airway inflammation and neuromuscular function, arousal mechanisms, and sleep architecture. Therefore, it may lead to sleep-disrupted breathing, particularly obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Herein, this study aims to research the association between smoking and OSA through the STOP-B
BACKGROUND: Frailty is recognized as a geriatric syndrome associated with depression. The consequences and mechanism of frailty transitions are still understudied. This study assessed the influence of frailty transitions on new-onset depressive symptomology using longitudinal, nationwide data of Korean community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: Longitudinal population-based study conducted in every even-numbered year starting from 2006 to 2020 (eight waves) with a sample of older adults aged ≥ 60
STUDY DESIGN: Case-control study. OBJECTIVE: To quantify risk factors for cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) using a large nationwide cohort in Korea, a country with a high prevalence of OPLL. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: OPLL is a pathological calcification of the posterior longitudinal ligament of the spine. OPLL progression can cause spinal cord injury that results in disability. Considering neurologic deficits and disability caused by OPLL, identifying OPLL ri
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of diabetes mellitus (DM) on the rate of carpal tunnel release (CTR) using a large nationwide cohort in Korea and to identify risk factors, including comorbidities and socioeconomic status (SES), associated with CTR. Patients with a primary or secondary diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS; ICD-10 code: G560) were selected and divided into two groups according to the presence of DM. A Cox proportional hazard model was used to assess the
BACKGROUND: Idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis (IGH) is a commonly acquired leucoderma that is characterized by discrete, round or oval porcelain-white macules ∼2-5 mm in diameter that increases in number with age. A variety of therapies with variable success rates, including cryotherapy, superficial abrasion and topical retinoids are currently being used. OBJECTIVES: The effects of fractional CO(2) laser therapy on IGH were investigated in this pilot study. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 40 pat
BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is one of the most leading causes of permanent visual impairments in Korea, and social expenses spent for the glaucoma are increasing. This study is to identify association between socioeconomic status and the visual impairments caused by primary glaucoma in Korea. METHODS: This study is based on a cohort study using stratified representative samples in the National Health Insurance claim data from 2002 to 2013 with 1,025,340 representative subjects. Target subjects were pat
OBJECTIVES: Mental health disorders and suicide are an important and growing public health concern in Korea. Evidence has shown that both globally and in Korea, obesity is associated with an increased risk of developing some psychiatric disorders. Therefore, we examined the association between distorted body weight perception (BWP) and suicidal ideation. METHODS: Data were obtained from the 2007-2012 Korea National Health and Nutritional Evaluation Survey (KNHANES), an annual cross-sectional nat
Although we need to perform further investigations to determine the exact mechanisms, regional deprivation, as well as medical factors, might be associated with survival after onset of ischemic stroke in low-income patients.
