About the Lab
Professor Jaegon Lee's research lab focuses on the intricate interplay between the gut microbiota, host immune responses, and gastrointestinal diseases, particularly inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC). The lab investigates how microbial metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) modulate intestinal inflammation and immune cell differentiation, while also exploring pathogenic bacteria like adherent-invasive *E. coli* (AIEC) in IBD pathogenesis. Using preclinical murine models and high-throughput sequencing, the lab examines the impact of antibiotic-mediated microbial manipulation on disease progression and tumorigenesis, with translational insights into clinical sedation strategies in endoscopic procedures. The research integrates microbiology, immunology, and clinical gastroenterology to identify novel therapeutic targets for chronic gut disorders.

15Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) play a pivotal role in maintaining intestinal homeostasis. We aimed to investigate the effects of SCFA supplementation on gut inflammation and microbiota composition in a murine colitis model. Mice were fed with sodium butyrate or a mixture of SCFAs in the drinking water for 2 weeks, followed by 2% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) for 7 d. After euthanasia, mouse colons were extracted to examine histological findings. Flow cytometry of the mouse colon tissues was perf
Adherent-invasive Escherichia coli (AIEC) has been reported as associated with the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We aimed to investigate the characteristics of mucosa-associated E. coli and the clinical significance of AIEC in Korean IBD patients. E. coli strains were isolated from the mucosal tissues of 18 Crohn's disease (CD) patients, 24 ulcerative colitis (UC) patients, and 9 healthy controls (HC). Adhesion, invasion, and survival assays were performed to evaluate phenoty
Controversies exist regarding the impact of age on gastric cancer-related mortality according to cancer stage. In our prospective cohort study, we evaluated the impact of age on stage-specific mortality in patients with gastric cancer. Between 2002 and 2006, patients with newly diagnosed gastric cancer were recruited from two university-affiliated hospitals in Korea. Follow-up data were updated regularly based on medical records and telephone surveys. Patients were classified into four subgroups
The gut microbiota has been implicated in the development of colitis-associated cancer (CAC). We investigated how the gut microbiota affects the development of CAC when the composition of the microbial community is altered by the administration of various antibiotics in a murine model. C57BL/6 mice were given intraperitoneal injection of 12.5 mg/kg azoxymethane (AOM), followed by two rounds of 2.0 % dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) exposure. Antibiotics, including ampicillin, neomycin, metronidazole
BACKGROUND/AIMS: It is unclear whether continuous infusion or intermittent bolus injection of propofol is better for achieving adequate sedation in endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of continuous infusion and intermittent bolus injection of propofol during therapeutic ERCP. METHODS: In this prospective study, we randomly assigned 232 patients undergoing therapeutic ERCP to either continuous infusion (CI group, n = 113) or intermitt
It has been suggested that manipulation of gut microbiota using antibiotics can inhibit colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC) in a mouse model. We investigated whether timing of gut microbial manipulation using antibiotics affects colon tumorigenesis in the azoxymethane (AOM)/dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced CAC model. CAC was induced in C57BL/6 mice by injection of 12.5 mg/kg AOM followed by three rounds of 1.7% DSS exposure. There were six groups based on timing of antibiotic administ
We experimentally demonstrated V-groove-based self-aligned SiN edge coupler (EC) on a monolithic CMOS-SiPh platform. <0.6/0.8 dB TE/TM SMF-EC transmission efficiency, in conjunction with <-39 dB back reflection and >520 mW power handling capability were achieved.
We demonstrate a waveguide-integrated germanium-on-silicon avalanche pho-todiode in a monolithic silicon photonics technology, with TE responsivity of 26 A/W at 1310 nm wavelength at -5 V operating bias with a 3-dB bandwidth of > 30 GHz.
Observation and performance of ESD under the supervision of an expert endoscopist are the primary methods for learning ESD. Hands-on course program has been used more frequently in recent years.
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Both hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) and liver stiffness (LS) are useful tools for predicting mortality in patients with cirrhosis. We investigated the combined effect of HVPG and LS on long-term mortality in patients with cirrhosis. METHODS: We retrospectively collected data from 103 patients with cirrhosis, whose HVPG and LS were measured between November 2009 and September 2013. The patients were divided into four groups according to the results of the HVPG and LS mea
The quality of colonoscopies performed in community hospitals and nonhospital facilities was suboptimal. Systematic reporting, auditing, and feedback are needed for quality improvement.
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Immunocompromised patients with acute colonic diverticulitis are at high risk for complications and failure of non-surgical treatment. However, evidence on the comparative outcomes of immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients with diverticulitis is lacking. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the outcomes of medical treatment in immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients with diverticulitis. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in P
Although antimicrobial therapy is recommended for patients with moderate or severe ischemic colitis, its beneficial effects are unclear. In the present study, the role of antimicrobial therapy in the treatment of ischemic colitis was investigated. Patients with ischemic colitis were retrospectively identified between January 2004 and June 2019. The characteristics and outcomes of patients who received antibiotics (antibiotics group) and those who did not (no-antibiotics group) were compared. Cli
LCI showed higher sensitivity in the endoscopic diagnosis of H. pylori infection than standard WLI.
