About the Lab
Professor Jaeseung Shin's research lab specializes in medical imaging and radiomics, focusing on the development and validation of non-invasive, quantitative imaging biomarkers for cancer prognosis and treatment response. The lab integrates advanced MRI and CT radiomics with clinical data to predict pathologic complete response in rectal and gastric cancers, as well as to assess hepatic steatosis in children using controlled attenuation parameter (CAP). A key emphasis is on improving personalized treatment strategies, including organ preservation in rectal cancer and early risk stratification for recurrence. The lab also investigates infectious diseases such as severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS), highlighting its translational impact in public health.

15Background Preoperative assessment of pathologic complete response (pCR) in locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) is increasingly needed for organ preservation, but large-scale validation of an MRI radiomics model remains lacking. Purpose To evaluate radiomics models based on T2-weighted imaging and diffusion-weighted MRI for predicting pCR after nCRT in LARC and compare their performance with visual assessment by radiologists. Materials and Methods Thi
In South Korea, nationwide surveillance for severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) began during 2013. Among 301 surveillance cases, 35 hospitalized case-patients in 25 areas were confirmed by using virologic testing, and 16 (46%) case-patients subsequently died. The SFTS cases occurred during May-November and peaked during June (9 cases, 26%). The incidence of SFTS was higher in the southern regions of South Korea. Age and neurologic symptoms, including decreased level of consciousne
This study demonstrated that the burden of WMH within cholinergic pathways was significantly higher in patients with PDD relative to other groups, and that cholinergic WMH was significantly correlated with a decline in frontal executive function and attention.
BACKGROUND: Controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) is a recently introduced, non-invasive and quantitative method to evaluate hepatic steatosis demonstrated in adults, but limited in obesity and not well evaluated in children. The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic performance for assessing hepatic steatosis grades using CAP in children based on MR proton density fat fraction (PDFF). METHODS: . Pearson's correlations between variables were also analyzed. RESULTS: In a total of 8
This study aims to evaluate the performance of a radiomic signature-based model for predicting recurrence-free survival (RFS) of locally advanced gastric cancer (LAGC) using preoperative contrast-enhanced CT. This retrospective study included a training cohort (349 patients) and an external validation cohort (61 patients) who underwent curative resection for LAGC in 2010 without neoadjuvant therapies. Available preoperative clinical factors, including conventional CT staging and endoscopic data,
The suspected food vehicle in these two consecutive outbreaks was kimchi contaminated with ETEC O6. We recommend continued monitoring and stricter sanitation requirements for the food supply process in Korea, especially in relation to kimchi.
BACKGROUND & AIMS: Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS) is a comprehensive system for standardizing CEUS at high risk for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We performed a meta-analysis to determine the diagnostic performance of the CEUS LR-5 for HCC and the pooled proportions of HCCs in each CEUS LI-RADS category. METHODS: We searched multiple databases for studies reporting the diagnostic accuracy of the CEUS LI-RADS. Random-effects model was used
BACKGROUND: The reported diagnostic performance for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) of each major imaging feature on MRI using standardized definitions of the Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS) is variable. It is important to know the actual performance of each LI-RADS major imaging feature for imaging diagnosis of HCC and determine the sources of heterogeneity between the reported results. PURPOSE: To systematically determine the performance of each major imaging feature of LI-RAD
BACKGROUND: According to the Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS), the LI-RADS category M (LR-M), which are probably or definitely malignant but are not specific for hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs), does not exclude HCCs. A gap in knowledge remains, including their characteristics and recurrence of HCCs categorized as LR-M. PURPOSE: To compare the characteristics of HCCs categorized as LR-M with HCCs categorized as LR-4 or LR-5 (LR-4/5) using the LI-RADS version 2018 and evaluate t
In June 2013, a diarrheal outbreak occurred among high school students in Incheon, South Korea. We investigated the outbreak to identify the pathogen and mode of transmission. A case-control study using a self-administered questionnaire was conducted by local authorities and the Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Bacterial cultures of stool samples, environmental samples, and samples of preserved food items were prepared. PCR, serotyping, and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFG
Transarterial embolization is safe and effective for managing vascular complications after partial nephrectomy. Moreover, renal function was well preserved with super selective transarterial embolization.
Liver stiffness and perfusion parameters were significantly increased in the livers of a rabbit SOS model. SSI and DECT might aid in early diagnosis of hepatic SOS.
