About the Lab

Professor Jeong Eun-cheol's research lab specializes in cerebrovascular diseases, with a primary focus on the diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of complex intracranial aneurysms—particularly blood blister-like aneurysms and dissecting aneurysms of the vertebrobasilar and internal carotid arteries. The lab emphasizes endovascular interventional techniques such as stent-assisted coil embolization and stent-within-a-stent procedures, especially in challenging acute and chronic cases. Additional research interests include the neuroimaging and structural differences in the brain (e.g., corpus callosum), as well as the impact of systemic conditions like diabetes and sarcopenia on cerebrovascular and sensory health.

SJR Q1Journal of neurosurgery

OBJECT: Ruptured blood blister-like aneurysms (BBAs) of the internal carotid artery (ICA) are rare but carry a high rate of morbidity and mortality. Furthermore, BBAs are very difficult to treat surgically as well as endovascularly. The authors present their experience in treating BBAs with reconstructive endovascular methods. METHODS: Nine ruptured BBAs in 9 consecutive patients (2 men and 7 women; mean age 50 years, range 42-57 years) were treated using reconstructive endovascular methods betw

In order to assess underlying structural differences between the male and female corpus callosum, the fractional anisotropy and volume of the corpus callosum, and also its T1 signal intensity, were measured. The corpus callosum of the 15 normal women and 15 normal men was drawn on the mid-sagittal T1-weighted image, for determining its volume and signal intensity, and this region of interest was projected onto the coregistered fractional anisotropy image, in order to obtain the value for the cor

Background: To evaluate the association between diabetes mellitus (DM) and the development of incident hearing loss. Methods: Prospective cohort study was performed in 253 301 adults with normal hearing tests who participated in a regular health-screening exam between 2002 and 2014. The main exposure was the presence of DM at baseline, defined as a fasting serum glucose ≥ 126 mg/dL, a self-reported history of DM or current use of anti-diabetic medications. Pre-diabetes was defined as a fasting g

SJR Q1Arteriosclerosis Thrombosis and Vascular BiologyOA

OBJECTIVE: Sarcopenia or low muscle mass is related to cardiovascular risk factors; however, the association between low muscle mass and subclinical atherosclerosis has been largely unexplored. We investigated whether muscle mass is related to coronary artery calcification (CAC) in a large sample of middle-aged asymptomatic adults. APPROACH AND RESULTS: We performed a cross-sectional study of 31 108 asymptomatic adults without cancer, diabetes mellitus, or known cardiovascular disease who underw

Treatment of blood blister–like aneurysm of the internal carotid artery with stent-assisted coil embolization followed by stent-within-a-stent technique
Byung Moon Kim, Eun Chul Chung, Sung Il Park, Chun Sik Choi, Yu Sam Won
SJR Q1Journal of neurosurgery

Ruptured blood blister-like aneurysms (BBAs) of the internal carotid artery (ICA) are potentially dangerous lesions because of the high risk of intraoperative bleeding associated with their wide fragile neck. The authors discuss cases in which BBAs were treated endovascularly during the chronic stage and report a case in which a ruptured BBA of the ICA was successfully treated in the acute phase with stent-assisted coil embolization and a subsequent stent-within-a-stent procedure.

OBJECT: A ruptured dissecting aneurysm of the vertebrobasilar artery (VBA-DA) is a well-known cause of acute subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) with a high rate of early rebleeding. Internal trapping of the parent artery, including the dissected segment, is one of the most reliable techniques to prevent rebleeding. However, for a ruptured VBA-DA not suitable for internal trapping, the optimal treatment method has not been well established. The authors describe their experience in treating ruptured VB

SJR Q1American Journal of Psychiatry

Objective: Reductions in the level of N -acetylaspartate within subcortical structures of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have been reported in several studies. However, there have been, as yet, no reports regarding N -acetylaspartate levels in the prefrontal cortex of adult drug-naive OCD patients. The authors used proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging ( 1 H-MRSI) to investigate regional N -acetylaspartate level abnormalities and changes after 12 weeks of pharmacothe

Intravascular embolization of fragments of indwelling intravascular diagnostic polyethylene catheter continues to occur. This causes many complications such as sepsis, thromboembolism, endocarditis and even perforation of cardiac chambers. The author experienced 3 cases of successful retrieval of intravascular iatrogenic catheter foreign bodies which were iocated in right pulmonary artery and inferior vena cava, using loop-snare technique.Percutaneous transluminal retrieval of catheter foreign b
