About the Lab
Professor Jeong Jin-Hwan's research lab specializes in neurosurgical disorders, with a primary focus on intracranial hemorrhages, particularly chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH), and their surgical management and recurrence predictors. The lab investigates clinical outcomes, prognostic biomarkers such as copeptin in stroke, and neuroprotective strategies in spinal cord injury. It also explores surgical techniques and implants, including cranioplasty and biomaterials like PMMA and autologous bone grafts, to improve patient recovery and reduce complications.

15OBJECTIVE Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is a common type of intracranial hemorrhage in elderly patients. Many studies have suggested various factors that may be associated with the recurrence of CSDH. However, the results are inconsistent. The purpose of this study was to determine the associations among patient factors, recurrence, and clinical outcomes of CSDH after bur hole surgery performed during an 11-year period at twin hospitals. METHODS Kaplan-Meier analysis was performed to evaluate
CP using sterilized autologous bone result in a significant rate of BFR. PMMA, however, is a safe alloplastic material for CP, as it has low complication rate.
OBJECTIVE: Pituitary apoplexy is one of the most serious life-threatening complications of pituitary adenoma. The purpose of this study is to investigate the visual outcome after early transsphenoidal surgery for the patients with pituitary apoplexy. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the 31 patients with pituitary apoplexy who were admitted due to acute visual acuity or field impairment and treated by transsphenoidal surgery. Five patients were excluded because of the decreased conscious leve
Copeptin, the C-terminal part of provasopressin, has emerged as a novel prognostic marker after hemorrhagic or ischemic stroke. The aim of this study was to quantitatively assess the prognostic significance of plasma copeptin level on functional outcome and mortality in patients with acute stroke using a meta-analysis of the available evidence. Thirteen relevant studies from 2,746 patients were finally included in our study. An elevated plasma copeptin level was associated with an increased risk
EFC after cranioplasty is predicted by postoperative air bubbles in the epidural space. Most EFC can be treated conservatively. However, reoperation is necessary to resolve about a third of the cases. During cranioplasty, special attention is required when the skull defect is large, since EFC is then more likely.
Objective : Minocycline, a second-generation tetracycline-class antibiotic, has been well established to exert a neuroprotective effect in animal models and neurodegenerative disease through the inhibition of microglia. Here, we investigated the effects of minocycline on motor recovery and neuropathic pain in a rat model of spinal cord injury. Methods : To simulate spinal cord injury, the rats’ spinal cords were hemisected at the 10th thoracic level (T10). Minocycline was injected intraperitonea
Amlodipine, a L-type calcium channel blocker, has been reported to have a neuroprotective effect in brain ischemia. Mitochondrial calcium overload leads to apoptosis of cells in neurologic diseases. We evaluated the neuroprotective effects of amlodipine camsylate (AC) on neural stem cells (NSCs) injured by oxygen glucose deprivation (OGD) with a focus on mitochondrial structure and function. NSCs were isolated from rodent embryonic brains. Effects of AC on cell viability, proliferation, level of
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective data analysis. OBJECTIVE: To identify factors affecting the atlantodental interval, the Ranawat value, and subaxial translation after rheumatoid arthritis (RA) diagnosis. In addition, factors predictive for cervical spine instability (CSI) development after RA diagnosis were examined. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Development of CSI affects the prognosis and mortality of RA patients. Previous studies described that obesity is associated with reduced radiographic joint d
Isolated hypoglossal nerve paresis due to mechanical compression from a vascular lesion is very rare. We present a case of a 32-year-old man who presented with spontaneous abrupt-onset dysarthria, swallowing difficulty and left-sided tongue atrophy. Brain computed tomographic angiography and magnetic resonance imaging of the brainstem demonstrated an abnormal course of the left vertebral artery compressing the medulla oblongata at the exit zone of the hypoglossal rootlets that was relieved by mi
Intracranial schwannomas are relatively common benign tumors arising from Schwann cells. Among the cranial nerves, the vestibular division of the vestibulocochlear nerve is the site most commonly affected by these lesions, followed by the trigeminal nerve. The authors report a case of bilateral schwannomas arising from both of the pterygoid canals. A 13-year-old girl presented with intermittent headaches and left-sided facial palsy. Preoperative computerized tomography scans and magnetic resonan
Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is the most common parasitic infestation of the central nervous system. Most cases of NCC are to related and/or associated with inflammation within the cerebral parenchyma. A 71-year-old woman presented with a 4-year history of visual disturbance. This symptom had become aggravated 4 weeks earlier. Her visual acuity gradually decreased and superior hemianopsia was noted. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an enhanced and thickened pituitary stalk accompanying a su
Traumatic intracranial aneurysms are rare, comprising 1% or less of all cerebral aneurysms. The majority of these aneurysms arise at the skull base or in the distal anterior and middle cerebral arteries or their branches following direct mural injury or acceleration-induced shearing force. We present a 50-year-old patient in whom subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) was developed as a result of traumatic aneurysm rupture after a closed craniofacial injury. Through careful evaluation of the three-dimens
