About the Lab
Professor Ji Hye Park's research lab focuses on the complex interplay between the gut microbiota, chronic inflammatory diseases, and gastrointestinal malignancies, with a particular emphasis on inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and colorectal cancer (CRC). The lab investigates microbial dysbiosis, host-microbe interactions, and the role of microbial extracellular vesicles in disease pathogenesis, aiming to uncover novel diagnostic and therapeutic targets. Research also extends to hepatobiliary diseases, especially HBV-related cirrhosis, where renal safety of antiviral therapies is evaluated. The lab integrates clinical epidemiology with molecular microbiology to advance precision medicine in gastrointestinal disorders.

15Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), are chronic inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract caused by interactions between genetic, environmental, immunological, and microbial factors. While the incidence and prevalence of IBD in Asian populations were relatively lower than those in Western countries, they appear to be gradually increasing. A Westernized diet, high socioeconomic status, improvement of hygiene, and development of
The human microbiota comprises trillions of microbes, and the relationship between cancer and microbiota is very complex. The impact of fecal microbiota alterations on colorectal cancer (CRC) pathogenesis is emerging. This study analyzed changes in the microbial composition in CRC subjects with both fecal microbiota and gut microbe-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs). From August 2017 to August 2018, 70 CRC patients and 158 control subjects were enrolled in the study. Metagenomic profiling of f
The incidence and prevalence of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are rapidly increasing worldwide. IBDs are considered an emerging problem not only in Western countries but also in developing counties. The relapses and complications of active IBD mandate various medications. Nevertheless, hospitalization, emergency room visits, or surgery may be required, resulting in a socioeconomic burden. Great advances have been made in the development of new therapeutic options for IBD to achieve inductio
In patients with HBV-related cirrhosis, TDF has shown similar renal safety to that of ETV over a 2-year period. Renal function should be closely monitored, especially in patients who exhibit decreasing eGFR, DM, and the use of diuretics.
The incidence and prevalence rates of inf lammatory bowel disease (IBD) have been increasing in East Asian countries over the past few decades. Accordingly, the general understanding and awareness of IBD among healthcare professionals has increased considerably in this region. This increase is ultimately associated with the evolving focus of IBD clinicians devoted to comprehensive patient care, especially in establishing IBD clinics/centers capable of providing multidisciplinary counseling. Elevated resting heart rate was independently associated with a higher rate of advanced adenoma recurrence in colorectal cancer survivors.
Abstract We aimed to identify the effects of physical activity and body composition on colorectal polyp recurrence in patients with previous colorectal cancer. A total of 300 patients were selected randomly from the colorectal cancer survivor cohort of Severance Hospital (Seoul, Korea). Patients reported various recreational physical activities and received surveillance colonoscopy. Body composition was measured with a body composition analyzer. We compared patients who exercised for at least 1
Higher disease-related knowledge could reduce the requirement of step-up therapy in IBD. The IBD-KNOW score was independently predictive of step-up therapy.
Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a medical emergency that threatens life. To this day, ARDS is very rarely reported by iodine contrast media, and there is no reported case of ARDS induced by gadolinium contrast media. Here, we present a case with ARDS after the use of gadobutrol (Gadovist) as a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast medium. A 26 years old female without any medical history, including allergic diseases and without current use of drugs, visited the emergency room f
Intestinal Behçet's disease is a rare, immune-mediated chronic intestinal inflammatory disease; therefore, clinical trials to optimize the management and treatment of patients are scarce. Moreover, intestinal Behçet's disease is difficult to treat and often requires surgery because of the failure of conventional medical treatment. Administration of anti-tumor necrosis factor-α, a potential therapeutic strategy, is currently under active clinical investigation, and evidence of its effectiveness f
